    Early morning.

    Not to pleased with this, just looks rather flat.

    I think it looks great Paul. It's a great concept for a painting as well! It is my favorite quiet time of the day (before my kids wake up...lol). To add a little atmosphere and make it appear less "flat" as you felt it was, you could possibly lighten the value or gray out some of the objects around and including the horizon line. This should add a little atmosphere and the illusion of mist in the distance. Either way, it's a beautiful painting!

    Pretty great. I think some of the "flatness" you feel comes from having the castle partly the same color as the sky. Lighting at dawn/dusk is very tricky to get right though. I haven't done it right yet. Compositionally it's pretty fun though. For some twisted reason I don't understand, it makes me think of a beach. What's with my head these days?

    Nicely done. My guess is that you could get more of a distance perception by elevating the building in the foreground, and placing the dark building on a lower plane. Possibly adding something inbetween, like a tree, might give it more of a depth perception.
