Cool. If I recall correctly, that sort of distorted shape on the floor between them was a bit of an optical illusion for people experiencing the actual painting in the real world. If you look at the painting at an oblique angle, the foreshortening works to compress it back into it's original shape which as I recall is a skull.
So yeah, the artist loved his games. He may have even been the first to play with the observer that way. But I'm thinking it won't be seen for the original intent in a digital painting unless someone takes it and distorts it in Photoshop or maybe you can do it in ArtRage. Dunno.
But you made a groovy painting. Looks good, MacMarvelo.

Since you're into paintings from this part of the world, here's one you may want to pay a visit to. Done by Everhardus Koster (Dutch, 1817 - 1892).
Bear in mind the overall composition and the groupings of shapes. Good lesson that.
Have fun and go get a pint and toke on a clay pipe down the tavern while you're there. Just stay out of the brawling as from the paintings they look to be a rough lot. If any of the patrons look like they're getting belligerent, just tell them you're a British subject and a student of Holbein and Rembrandt. That way they may only try to get you to buy the next round.
EDIT: I brightened up the jpeg in case it wasn't easy to see. Now it should be better.
