You can paint in metallic *looking* paint, but for shiny metallic printing, you will need to use special inks or papers and talk to your print shop. The original colour of the painting will matter less than whether they have shiny cardstock (common) or metallic ink (less common and may need to be added by hand).

Either adjust the metallics slider in the colour wheel or find a good metal reference. It's all in the lighting (metal is shiny and reflective, so highlights can make something look metallic).
