    Sir Edmund Hillary

    The World has lost a True Man. I remember when he did it.

    Rest in Peace.

    I had no idea he had been still alive. Was Everest first conquered so recently?

    Well, rest in peace. Get that man a sherpa who can go higher than the ones who helped him last time on his ascent.

    I remember it too. Ironic how little time passed between then and a man on the moon.

    @DA ............here's a quote from the BBC's report:

    Returning to Everest base camp, he famously greeted another member of the British expedition group with the words: "Well, George, we've knocked the bastard off."

    After the ascent, Sir Edmund led a number of expeditions to the South Pole and devoted his life to helping the Sherpas of Nepal's Khumbu region.

    His Himalayan Trust has helped build hospitals, clinics, bridges, airstrips and nearly 30 schools. He was made an honorary Nepalese citizen in 2003.

    A nice man.

    @ Robert................yes it sort of ties in with Albert's link on Shift and your reply there................the speed of change is accelerating!

    Wow. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know he was a kiwi. All my life I heard 'Sir' and immediately thought he must be a Brit.

    Well, it must have been one of those lives. . . large. Can hardly imagine what that must have been like.

    Endurance is the quality that jumps to my mind. The embodiment of endurance.

    Thanks guys for highlighting him.
