    Large avatar?

    Hello
I see that some people have much larger icons than the limit is for the upload. I was wondering how bigger avatars can be uploaded.

    Thank you,

    Netti

    Hi Netti,

What these people will have done is to link to an offsite image using the option in their profile "Link to off-site Avatar:
Enter the URL of the location containing the Avatar image you wish to link to." and having the image hosted on their own website or an image hosting site.

    Hope that's of some use!

:? well i don't wanna upset you netti, but i think its not a quite good idea!
i see so many chaotic forums with large images as avatars and in the signature....

    what do you think....

    should this be allowed?

Avatar envy. It's not a pretty thing to see.

I've seen some where the avatars out-do the entire content of the forums. So yes, that would be very off-putting. I would like to keep the focus on the art and comments.

That also keeps the focus on Artrage, which doesn't animate.

But just in principle, I could see people leaving because of those large blinking avatars making it impossible to see the art.

I suppose for those people who like sitting calmly in their back yard with friends while the neighbor's dogs incessantly bark their fool heads off is a good thing, then they might disagree.

Oh yes i agree - these "xtra" large avatars are really disturbing...

Why Ambient-Design Forum Admins do not simply remove the option to use linked Avatars?

We're happy to deal with them on a case by case basis at this point. If someone wants to use a slightly larger avatar that's ok with us, but we'd like people not to use large images or super neon glowy brain seizure inducing animated things. Ideally I'd like to keep avatars at maximum 120 by 120 pixel size as a guideline if linked from offsite ( that one's a bit big, Netti ), as people with lower screen resolutions can indeed find that large avatars take up a fair emount of screen real estate which can be distracting.

If it gets out of hand, then we can certainly look at removing the option to use offsite avatars. Feedback is welcome, of course!
