Explorer plug-in to display thumbnails for AR files

I think it would be great to have an explorer plug-in that would support display of thumbnail images for AR files. I'm not sure if you store a thumbnail version in the file already -- that would obviouly make it easier (or even possible - since no one wants to wait for a rendering of the thumbnails each time you're in a directory).

I had thought about this idea before -- but then when following a link in another post, I saw that dogwaffle happens to offer something like this for their files. So I figured I would throw the idea out there.

Yup, we do indeed store a thumbnail in the painting file.
If someone can point me to a sample app for writing a shell extension for thumbnail viewing, I could probably whip it up in an afternoon. (C++ preferably, no .Net please!)

This is what I could find quickly (can you tell I'm interested in this?!)

About writing Shell Extensions -- see Complete Idiot's Guides
    http://www.codeproject.com/shell/

Guide 9 (IX) seems to be the key one:

Some other links I came across that might be of interest:

An example of a thumbnail extractor

And his C# (I know...) version:

This would be on my "oh that's nice to have" list. I admit I have felt a little wishful in thumbnail mode at only seeing an icon. Thanks for discussion and consideration.

I agree... this is a nice to have - not as important as some of the tools folks have been hoping for.

    More useful than water colours!

I've got a really sloppy way of naming files. Based on, "I'll remember what those two or three letters and a number were, no problemo!"

It would help sort out the huge number of files into sensible folders.

Maybe a file preview when opening ArtRage files?

If I am not mistaken, if AR used the standard File Open dialogue box, then the ability to display thimbnails is the same code/functionality that puts it in Explorer -- as the dialogue is essentially a wrapper around explorer.

I haven't bumped into anything personally that can preview ArtRage files. I'm thought it came up in another discussion and someone pointed out an app that was very sneaky and had managed to work out a way of displaying something from them, but after multiple forum searches I can't for the life of me find it!
