    Stencil Fun Ar2.5

To start this tutorial, fire up ArtRage. Go to the button below, that says: 'tracing'. when you click on it, it will give you a window that let's you choose the image to trace. Go to the AR directory, and under recources, tracing images, you'll find the file that's been used here.

Use the pencil,to trace the rose carefully.

When done you can remove your image by choosing: "tools" "tracing options" "clear tracing image"

Just say: "Rage It", because we already know it's art.

again a dialogue let's you find the same picture.

now click on "tools" "show colors sample panel"

activate the eyedropper tool, we are going to add colors from the reference to our new panel.

(edit:I am currently uploading the pictures from my disk.Looks like photobucket lets me down..)

choose a color you want from that rose with the colorpicker, let's say, the darker tone.
On the bottom of the panel, click on "new" the color swap is allready in the panel. If you want you can name it, if you don't need to, don't.
pick another color, and again, click on "new", and the next color appears. Add as many colors as you need.

Now it's time to start working. On the layer panel, on the right you'll have to click twice on "Add Layer" you'll see the tw new layers appear.
I will use one for the making of my stencils, and one to color my drawing.

Activate the upper layer, to make the first stencil. I always use the marker to make stencils.Choose as color black.

Start painting the fisrt petal of the rose.We will paint carefully petal by petal. So take the first one you want to paint, and make it intirely black.Be sure to paint on the pencilline,as we don't want to see it anymore.

You'll see your efforts in the layer panel.Click on the little arrow that is on the active layer,(accidentally activated the layer below when making this screenshot, you need the one you are working on ! sorry about that)it will open up some options.
"Make a stencil from this layer" is what we need.

Imediatly you'll see your stencil. But it is filled with black ,so click again on this little arrow in the layers panel, and choose "Clear layer".

Now we can paint !! choose as painting tool the airbrush, in your favourite settings.

Activate the other layer we made, just above the drawing.
I started painting with the midlle tone for that petal, then I chose the darker color to make the shaded side of the petal.

After the darker tone I added some lighter tones, and the lightest of them all on the edge.

The trick for airbrushing is to set the size of your brush not too small,to paint with just the edge of your brush.Don't make him too wide ,or you'll paint outside your stencil, spoiling your artwork!.

Then choose, "remove this stencil" from the menu you'll find, by rightclicking on the stencil.

First petal ready, move on to the next.

I'll take you through the steps once more...

Activate the layer that's for making stencils.
    Paint the petal black
    "make stencil from this layer"

    "clear layer"
    activate layer for coloring.
paint petal in the colors you need.
    "remove this stencil"

and move on to the next petal untill you flower is finished.

I hope you'll have fun using this technique.

Well done Hanzz. Very concise description of good masking methods. I like that you also showed the named floating color pallet. Good teaching.
    Be well,

Create custom stencils to serve as masks, but more of the feel in the real life of a frisket when airbrushing. Very clever. Well done tutorial.
We are in the process of becoming.
