    Stencils as masks

    1. Add a new layer
    2. Paint in black the areas you want to mask
    3. Create a stencil from the new mask layer
    4. Delete/hide the new mask layer
    5. Use the stencil as a mask

    That's an excellent tip, Charlie.

    If you want it to look more like the QuickMask function in Other Digital Painting Applications, set the new layer's opacity to 50% (or so), and use red to paint in the area you want to mask. You can see what's beneath while you work.
    Use the eraser on its hardest setting to get crisper edges to your masked area.

    Cool mate! you've beaten me to it, I just wrote a tutorial about it 8)
