Thread: Why the price increase?

    Why the price increase?

I remember reading the "why $20" link and thinking, wow, these guys are pioneers for great, cheap software.

And then the price got hiked in the past week.

    Will 3.0 be $30? 4.0, $40? I hope we don't see a version 12, $120.

Oh wait... I get free updates right? Right!?

    A couple of thoughts...

First, they've been selling it for a few years with no price increase until now.

Second, it is still INCREDIBLY inexpensive for what you are getting!

You know what? I would happily pay $40 for version 4. They offer a great program and provide excellent support.

Honestly, if Version 3 was $49.95, it would still be wonderfully priced, and I would easily pay to upgrade from 2.x as well.

Um, forgive me. I must have given you the impression I was bitching.

    I wasn't. I'm just curious.

These guys have earned a price increase. I hope they increased it enough to keep moving forward comfortably. I am not a man of means at this point in my life but I will pay what ever price they ask. I trust them to set it at a point that is not unreasonable. I also genuinely want them to be making enough to enjoy the comforts of life and be free of worry.

I can only agree! I haven´t seen another piece of software with such a high price-performance ratio yet. Even for 100 USD or more it would still be a bargain.

C'mon guys let the whole third world buy it first. When you have sold 3 billion copies then you can raise the price again if you want. Agree that it is worth way more than 30 dollars though. Heck the Academic version of Painter is 95.00 and it isn't even as good as this.

    It's a fair question.
We raised the price because over the past two years inflation has taken the cost of development up, and the US dollar has also reduced in value against our currency.

We believe ArtRage is still very good value for money. We hope it continues to fund its development so we can keep adding more natural painting features.

Andy, you failed to point out that the cost of upgrades to us has remained constant. Then again, it has also gone up exponentially!

    Hehe.

    Here's some math for you...
Since ArtRage was released 18 months ago NZ dollar has changed by 20% against the US dollar. Also there has been around 3% inflation.
So in actual revenue terms, the increase to us appears to be 2%

Out of that 1.5% increase, we have to support a massively increased user-base - the users who purchased 18 months ago still need technical support, forum administration, help with lost reg keys and installers, and so on.
Despite that, ArtRage 2.5 has literally twice as much source code (we did a line count between ArtRage 2.0 and ArtRage 2.5, and there were around twice as many lines of code in 2.5) to maintain.

So in terms of price increase, new users are getting twice the value, for only a 2% increase in price.
Existing users, of course, are getting twice the value at no cost at all!
