Controlling the hue and lightness can give emotion and contrast to a panel. Sometimes, however, to speed it up I will make a layer for a quick change of lightness, rather than create a new palette color for all the different shadowed portions of my drawing. I paint over a designated area that I want the shadow to be in, with 100% black, then turn the opacity of the layer down; the lower the opacity, the lighter the shadow. By doing this, it quickly gives you a shadow to any and all colors beneath your areas you paint. You can also combine tints of any color or add highlight to create shiny surfaces. It's a time saver for tiny areas that helps enhance the shadow effect, without having to paint in a lot of lost detail.
