    panel from my webcomic

Here's a panel from the most recent page published of my webcomic, "Proxy: the Continuing Adventures of Michael Leesome". I export my images out of Artrage and do my page layout in a free program called Inkscape.

Simple gradients can do a lot to create depth and convey lighting. Also, don't be afraid to get more specific with your core shadows. The shadows kind of indicate the darkest dark in the panel, set those and you can then easily start to make lighting and shading decisions relative to the shadow's nature.
