Question Airbrush-Problem: opaque streaks form a hard edged core (like posterization)

    Hi!

I have a problem with the Airbrush-Tool. Whenever I paint with dark colors so that the Airbrush-Streak is a gradient from a soft edge to, for example, opaque black, the black appears as a hard edged area in the midst of the streak. As an example to show what I mean, I attached a picture of the problem. In fact it isn't possible to paint a soft gradient from transparent to full black with the Airbrush-Tool, no matter what adjustions I make or if I try it by laying many streaks one over each other.. That is verry ugly and annoying, and it only happens when I work with ArtRage (5.0.8). It does'nt happen with Krita or MyPaint. What could be the reason for it? And are there any preferences to avoid that?

My OS is Windows 10 Home, my Computer a Dell XPS 8930, Intel Core i7-8700 CPU, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB, my Tablet is an old Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch CTH-470.

If the Autoflow toggle is turned on the airbrush will continue to spray as the stylus is held still. This means that more paint is sprayed on the same spot so will build up a darker edge as the spray continues to layer over itself, like a real airbrush. Turning off autoflow prevents the spray building up without the stylus being moved so you can control how much spray is applied in any given area.

Hi Matt, Thanx for your answer!

No, this also happens with the Autoflow turned off. Dependig on the adjustments, it can even happen by painting just one quick line, if the pressure is on a higher level. And it also happens by crossing lines. It seems that it always happens at a certain value of darkness. It does'nt happen with brighter tones (as you can see on the screenshot below). It is not possible to draw a soft streak with a gradient from a soft edge to absolute black, without getting this hard edge. And by painting on already painted areas these ugly hard edged areas also often appear. So the Airbrush-Paintings will never contain pure black without this ugly hard edged Specks. Even dark colors sometimes cause these specks. It is a little similar to spray too much too wet color too fast and/or too close to the ground with an analogue Airbrush, that is true. But there it happens with every color, no matter how dark it is.
