Painting on current layer, but blending with below

New to the inner working of ArtRage here. Is this possible? I'm currently experimenting with oil brush and want to paint a figure, but fear that it might not turn out well and have to start all over. So a new layer is created, but there's nothing on this new layer and the paint doesn't blend. Anyway I can start painting on this layer as if I'm painting on the below layer?

Got this app a few years back. Took me this long to finally begin experimenting with it. This was quickly done with a "Dry Clumps" brush. Just dabbing color.

Make a copy of Layer 1, then try what you wish ... no need to fear.

As dannac says. In fact, whenever I have a layer I'm pleased with I make a duplicate and use "lock all" to keep me from making accidental changes to the original. Then I am free to try new things on the duplicate. Also, I make duplicates of a project as I work by using "save as" with the name of the original plus an identifier for that particular attempted change of the project. That way I can find an earlier layer from an earlier edition as needed.
