Well, the final outcome is lovely. isn't it? I see You left a uniform pencil otline and main signs.
Was it a choice? The effect is nice I find.
Maybe darkness and thickness of the pencil could be also changed as an experiment to see if it makes the horse pop out even better in its tri-dimensionality ....

I actually wasn't sure on weather to keep the sketch lines, so i checked it out by removing the layer and it looked better with it on, so i kept it.
And sure i'll try changing the opacity of the sketch lines my next horse drawing and see what happens

really a beautiful work, I agree with Caesar the pencil lines provide a good separation of the horse from the background, might I suggest if you did not already try it
rather that changing the opacity, try one of the layer blending modes, in this case maybe multiply, or overlay for a softer look.. If you still have this in a layered format.
