As a metaphor it's very powerful and articulate. A lifetime of cigarettes smoked leaving lots spent on many levels. The good news in this imagery is that there is a sort of phoenix renewal. Did you know that some trees naturally re-seed only after a fire? It takes a forest fire to promote new life. Besides, another Zen sort of point is that there's plenty of charcoal available for an artist, just for the taking. So armed with subject matter and artists' materials -- what could be better.
