Hey Rondo,
Have figured you have been challenged physically for some time now from little hints that you've dropped. I'm very sorry to hear it has to do with breathing. Of course I would hate to hear it was anything other than perfect health. But this is very challenging indeed -- something we all take for granted until we don't have it easily available, then it is the most important thing in the world. So I hear you, my friend.
Your art has gotten better and better over time. I think part of it is that you got to where it was a little more than just a dabble. I think you're really speaking through your images. And as they are very symbolic of where you're coming from, they are very elegant and articulate, even in their relative simplicity. The subject is generally clear, and it got to where the way you applied your paint spoke of the effort involved. But they're brilliant, and even in the hardship, through it can be seen the intention to find something, to create a dialog of sorts with us here, but also within yourself. It's always been so interesting to me how conversations from within just sort of well up and float to the surface.
What has also been interesting to me is that you have chosen the Earth as a constant source of metaphor, whether in global warming, deforestation, or whatever the imagery is that pears it all down to the core. The elemental character of your symbolism suggests a lot of soul searching and looking for a parallel context, someone or something that has a rapport that relates to you personally. And that you see the Earth itself as being your partner in dialog, as if you and the planet are a couple people sharing a recovery room making conversation -- maybe even a conversation with a parental figure.
In the old days before all this translation technology, when I was traveling to places where language was not mine, and since words didn't work in that context, I had occasion to draw pictures to get my message across. I could at least identify the simpler more basic ideas. And the other person either got the message or they didn't. But sooner or later I could get my ideas across. I'm wondering if this isn't how art can be used, just in a more relaxed manner where someone is not staring at you losing patience. Hahah.
Anyway, that's not too far afield from how I see most casual paintings that are unfettered by commercial imperatives of subject and quality. When someone can paint whatever they feel like painting, pushing paint around like a hands on ink blot test, a whole lot comes through -- most of all for the artist themselves to express.
So, there's my picture, the way I paint these days -- in words. Hope you get from it what I'm trying to communicate -- you do matter, your health matters, and your paintings are personal notes that let anyone paying attention know where you are.
Be well my friend, and take this ride you've been handed the ticket for. This is yet another phase of the journey from which comes a whole lot of stuff from inside -- generating emotion, thoughts, insights, and amplifies it all so we get a good look. Please continue to let us know how you're doing.
Be well, Rondo.
