am i just being thick?

i am trying to paint a portrait and have a ref photo up. i set up the grid for both canvas and ref and thought i could use grid as a guide but the canvas and ref grids are not exactly the same? am i missing something here? cheers in advance.

Because the canvas and the reference image are unlikely to be identical proportions, it's going to make the grid look different for each one. You want to switch between 'Squares' and 'Pixels' for the grid display to figure out which one works best for you.


‘Pixel’ spacing will reflect the actual pixel size of the Reference image, so you may have a different number of squares across differently sized references and the main canvas. However, the shape and pixel size of the squares will be the same.

‘Squares’ spacing will be relative to the dimensions of the reference image, rather than the canvas (so both images will show the same number of lines down and across, but the proportions may differ).
