    Question about the rulers

    Hello!

Not sure if this is the right area of the forum to post this (maybe the Technical section), but here goes. The rulers you can use, are the measurements actually correct?

I mean, I'm trying to make a drawing for a woodblock print. So I need the drawing to be 10cm x 15cm. I used the rulers to set up an area on the canvas, but when I printed out the final drawing, it ended up being smaller than the rulers said. 4cm by 6.2cm. Not sure what the problem is.

Hello mwdowns and welcome to the ArtRage forums
In general I've found the Rulers to be fairly accurate within AR.
So my guess here is that the discrepancy you encountered was caused by a change in ppi/dpi settings at some point.
I just tried a quick test and an image of 10cm x 15cm made @72ppi/dpi but printed at 180ppi/dpi will give me a printed image of 4cm x 6cm +/-
Some printer settings can also upset things, for example auto rescaling an image so it fits to the loaded paper size can give unexpected results too.

Yup. The measurements for the ruler are the same as the measurements for the actual canvas size. However, 'physical' measurements like inches and mm are calculated based on a) Pixels ("actual" digital size) and b) estimated print quality, or DPI/PPI (the number of pixels that will be printed out per inch).

If you changed the DPI at some point, or your printer did, then that would change the final printed size.

Thank you for your replies! I haven't changed anything in my printer settings. I looked around in the Art Rage settings for dpi settings or page settings but couldn't find anything to set the paper size or anything. I'm just printing straight from the program and getting the smaller size. What exactly do I need to do to get it to print the correct size?

    Hello mwdowns

If you open your painting and then go to the edit menu and select "Resize Painting" you get a window with 2 tabs. Choose the one that says "Print Size". There you can set your dimensions and DPI which generally should be set to 300 dpi for high quality printing.

    Hope this helps.

But you can go right down to 72 DPI - whether you notice much difference depends on what you need it for and how picky you are
