I am trying to do something like the thing Matt Kaufenberg do. He uses Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I will only use ArtRage trying out his method and style. The whole idea is to make closed forms with colour and texture not using contours. Just flat forms without volume. No shadows or such to indicate volume or depth.
The idea is to make an illustration of me in my youth in the mid 60's. Back then I was often dressed in a dark blue duffel coat and a long red knitted scarf, slim black cordroy jeans and black higt heel boots. Inspired by the brits I also visited London from time to time to buy the right stuff, clothes and such. So that is the idea behind the picture.
This screenshot shows my first steps. On top layer you can see the initial sketch. I used my small paper sketchbook for roughing out the idea. I scanned it and used the sketch in ArtRage and refined it until it was something that I liked. Next step was adding a light blue background with a rough border and an overlay texture to get the right feeling of grunge and vintage.
The Pen tool with a good smooooth setting is used instead of the Vector Tools in Illustrator. The Pen works very well, just as good as vectors! I fill in every detail on different layers. Later on I will work my way on each one of the layers adding details, texture and colors.
