    Autumn Glory III a Work-in-Progress

New video showing my work on my triptych painting "Autumn Glory" Best if seen in 1080HD

I have already painted in the first layer of impasto colors for my Autumn painting, titled "Autumn Gold." This video picks up from there. This painting is actually the 3rd panel of a triptych - a 3-piece painting. In this video, I am working on two separate layers and am glazing extra colors onto the tree. I'm using Gamblin colors found at the ArtRage forum under "Art Supplies" http://forums.artrage.com/forumdispl...0-Art-Supplies. For the light part of the bark, I am using Portland Grey Light with touches of Quick Dry White. Then to achieve the rounding shading for the cylinder of the tree, I use mixtures of Portland Grey Medium, Payne's Grey, and touches of Terre Verte.

That glazing coat is brushed on with a tapered dry brush (also from the ArtRage Art Supplies forum), The base impasto finish put on an underneath layer comes through nicely, and gives a textured surface.

After the glazing is put on, I then start painting the dark cracks and marks in the bark surface using two templates that I've created myself. The templates are shown up as red in ArtRage and can be rotated and sized with ease. Open areas of the template are where the paint will be allowed though. So I apply this bark texture coat on yet another layer on the birch tree. These trees are in shadow in the forest, so they are darker than other birch trees that are elsewhere in the paintings. I use just Payne's Grey for the dark cracks and marks in the bark.

Thank you! to all those who have made awesome brushes and color palettes for ArtRage. After these three paintings are done, I'll be sharing the stencils I've made that I've created for the tree bark textures.

Fantastic stuff. I'm somewhat new to ArtRage in that while I've painted a few illustrations using it I haven't thoroughly went through every feature. I like how you've used some bark stencils to aid in the creation of the bark. I'm doing a painting now where I'm going about adding bark to a tree. I think I'll be creating a stencil of my own for this.

Where did you get the tube color samples from?

Thank you! I got the tube color samples from the most excellent ArtRage forum Art Supplies here: http://forums.artrage.com/forumdispl...0-Art-Supplies
You have to do just search for them, there's quite a lot of awesome color palettes. I just happen to use a Gamblin color palette.

I made my stencils in Photoshop where I found some various birch bark textures and made manipulated them where they would make a good alpha stencil.

Autumn Glory III work-in-progress - detailing birch trees

A bit more work on the foreground birch trees that are in shadow. I'm detailing the bark texture on the birch trees in shadow using ArtRage Studio Pro 4.
The trees have 3 layers of texture. The first is an impasto pass, the second is a color glazing pass, and the 3rd is the bark texture done with Payne's grey.

The image below shows the initial impasto finish layer completed

Next, here's a shot of the details on the birch trees. The darker, foreground trees are in full shadow, hence they are darker. where'as the brighter trees are out in the sunlight. You can see the bark stencil that I made, I use two of them.

A clearer shot without my menus.

    Layers are:

    1) Impasto colors
    2) Color glazing: using Gamblin oil color set: Quick Dry White, Portland Grey Light, Grey Medium, Grey Deep, Payne's Grey, Naples Yellow Hue, Terre Verte
    3) bark texture: Payne's Grey

After the trees are done, then I start doing the leaves which is very tedious work.

Love the impasto work. Hope you do more videos. It's fascinating to see how others work.

Thank you! Here's another video I did last year:

It's not with the impasto look though. I'm using one of my marble reference photos that I shot last year (I need to upload those too for people to use).

    Changes! Customizing my leaf brush

I just finished customizing my brushwork to do these leaves in the 3rd painting of my triptych "Autumn Glory." I'm actually very pleased with the results more than I did in the first (middle painting). It's more impressionism, which is actually what I want to go for. I tend to be very tight with the details because I am very technical in my art. I took drafting classes and I love detailed illustrations. Yet, I need to loosen up, and that's what I'm trying to accomplish here in this triptych. I'm so happy that I've nailed the brush customization, albeit a bit later in the paintings. I'll be going in to the first painting and making those changes too.

Here, I have just finished the tree bark on the larger trees (small thin tree trunks aren't done yet), and I just finished one pass on the leaves in the background.

    Finished with Autumn Glory III

Here's how it turned out. This is one of three 40" x 22" paintings that will be on canvas wrap. When it arrives I will be hand brushing an impasto embellishment to the giclee print. I'll be doing that with all three of the triptych.

What do you do to create an impasto on the printed canvas? Do you paint over it with actual paint or some clear stuff?

What brush customization did you do?
