Unfortunately we're not able to support XP in the latest version due to some of the more modern technology we introduced when we shifted to our 64 bit build. Changes in the operating system and improvements to the product that can be made by taking advantage of those do mean that it may be unavoidable that an older operating system is not supported in new product versions. However, we will be keeping version 4.0 available in the Member Area so that the existing version continues to work.

Although for a different reason, I feel your pain.

I had an old Dell XPS system running XP (top of the line when I bought it back when dinosaurs ruled the internet). I also had a 2008 model Macbook Pro running slightly outdated OS, too. The Dell finally died and the MBP did weeks later. It was tough because the XP system was looking to be a series of upgrades I wanted and then some I needed but colliding with the hardware of what started out as a Win98 machine being old.

In the end, I got a current model 27" iMac with the latest Mac OSX, put Windows 8.1 on the Bootcamp partition and am really happy to be out of the XP-dying situation. 13 years was good service for that OS on a 15 year old computer. It wasn't how I planned to upgrade (and I never like spending money) but in the end it keeps my current and my workflow going forward.

I hope you can find a way to update/upgrade and keep the joy of digital art going strong.

If you are still using XP you are using an unsafe system. None will develop new software for XP... Ubuntu and Linux are a different story, I know. But developing new software for XP is simply losing time and maybe even money: you have to use the right software. Old versions, made for XP.

I think part of the original poster's concern was that WINE may not support the newer OS systems we're using in 4.5. However, until someone tries it I don't think anyone will know for sure.

Dropping support for older systems is not something we do often, and we try to delay it as long as possible, but in this case the overhead of supporting XP as well, and some of the odd behaviours we found in Windows functionality when running those compatible systems in 64 bit, made it necessary.

Anyone bemoaning loss of XP support should seriously consider trying Windows 7.
It is a good stable solid OS, and with a bit of UI tweaking can look and work almost the same as Windows XP.
Because Microsoft has dropped XP support it means our development tools are losing XP support. For us to continue supporting XP it would mean we'd be forced to use older tools, and we wouldn't be able to take advantage of newer better technologies in the Windows operating system. This would disadvantage all our ArtRage users.
Windows XP was released 13 years ago. We had to move on.

Adding to what everyone's said, Ambient Design isn't the only company to do this.

Adobe, for example, wants you to at least have Windows 7 or higher to even use Photoshop CC. I had to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 8.1. (Which I don't regret despite some growing pains with device drivers. All things are running quite smoothly now.)
