    Wasps

I've been really looking at bugs for awhile, except from an artistic point of view. This wasp was really pretty so I drew it in ink then in oil. I wasn't happy with the ink version so I only included the oil version. The wings are dorky, my reference didn't have any so I had to improvise. I should have given them some transparency but live and learn.

The last time I kept an open mind,
my brain fell out and the dog grabbed it.
Now it's full of dirt, toothmarks, and dog slobber.
No more open minds or dogs for me.www.gms9810.com/

Great -- you'll be in great demand by the naturalists wanting clear illustrations of the species they're studying. Very clear. Nice volume, nice detail. Is a Yellow Jacket and a Wasp the same thing?

Yellow Jacket is a common name for wasps in America, the rest of the world just says wasps.

This is really good, but there is a few things that are slightly confusing, so I'd work on the detail if in fact you'd be interested in doing "more scientific" illustrations. The main thing is the legs and their position, as well as the wings. But that's just "moving things around".

A pretty good effort George, and wonderful you are drawing so well from life! If you want to know more about the wings, google and see what other images online say.

There are several kinds of wasps here. Red wasps, paper wasps, yellow jackets, mud daubers, blue wasps, and a few others. This one is what some people call a yellow jacket but true yellow jackets are longer and sleeker. This kind has a bad habit of liking sweet liquids, in late summer they fly into people's soda cans and cups resulting in people getting stung in the mouth. I might do a red wasp next.
