Very clearly articulated surrealism. It's as if he pondered 'What would it look like if I flipped contexts to where we see the unlikely or impossible realistically?' Sort of a magician's illusion in painting.

With stuff like this I would like to see the originals to see if there's a viewing distance where it all sharpens into crystal clarity vs how close one can get whether it remains perfectly photographic.

It's a similar thing with looking at old traditional matte paintings for film where on screen they look photographic, but seeing the original shows it to be a lot looser than you would have guessed. And therein lies the mastery of that craft -- mostly in handling values and color.

I've seen paintings that were crystal clear and sharp and when getting closer it showed all the paint daubs and whatnot. And I've seen others where the painting was perfectly photographic even when you get right up to it. It would be interesting to see which camp this falls into.

    Thanks F-P. Fun to look.

This is the largest high resolution one I could find Mr DAkey, looks painterly to me. The titles of his painting are puns, I wonder if he starts with that first?

Wow. Surprised he'd have such a high rez pic on the internet. Wonder if he's aware of it.

Anyway, it's a lot looser than the little reduced pics show. Clever ideas. And whimsical as you say.

As to which came first, chicken, egg, or punn. . . probably every which-a-way after the first inception. At one point when looking at writing pop music, you dig through all the stacks and stacks of books on the subject and according to many on the topic it often comes down to every possible way that an idea can come, that's how it comes. I wouldn't at all be surprised if while he's painting he's already thinking about the next one(s). I think it would be interesting to see if he was more inclined to come up with the visual idea first or the word play idea. Probably sometimes they even come while visiting the rabbit hole with the Easter Punny.

He's probably be a hoot to hang out with as well.

Yes, the high res image is asking for trouble, considering what has happened to me this week. His work is very clever and beautifully painted. I'm not sure he is saying anything very succinct, but just getting different bit and pieces and tying them in to some sort of an obscure story.

I really enjoyed looking at them nevertheless!
