The shadow (?) in the foreground makes you wonder what's there......

Ah, yes! I hadn't noticed the shadow at first, but was more focused on the reflected light on the water. Good eyes copespeak! I like putting the viewer in the painting a bit like that. I like how the slight shift in tone, layed down with a sharper-edged tool gives the effect of reflected light so well. Interesting to have no sky as well-- all water and ice, receding into the distance.

At the beginning of spring, the sunshine is warm, the ice breaks slowly, the river flows and yet is still ... there is a Zen saying, "to know whether the water is cold or warm, you must taste it yourself" ("leng nuan zi zhi") ... the cast shadow expresses doubt that the artist has achieved enlightenment ...

You really caught the feel of the cold lonely water when the ice is still floating , Pete

thanks jean! ... eighty+ I am the walrus (I forget the sounds that come after that) ...

Steve, as always, I welcome your comments on technique ... So this began as a pencil drawing on a rice paper ground on the iPhone ... I used various widths and opacities, and I think just two colors apart from white ... I worked top down, from the ice floes to the viewer's vantage point ... After a while, as the forms began to emerge, I decided to apply a watercolor overlay to unify the darks and lights ... So I brought the image up on the iPad and applied delicate dry and very thin layers over the whole surface (in this way, the shadow in the foreground came into focus, and I left it as it was) ... then I reloaded the image onto the iPhone and added the darkest darks and highest lights in pencil ... In most "effets de neige" (winter scene paintings), there is some sky visible above the ice floes -- the sky tells you what the mood is and the light tells you how the water and ice flow ... I reversed this by having the river carry the mood and motion ... the shadow was a "found object" and as I've said, fits nicely with a common zen saying that has been used for centuries to encourage enlightenment ...
