How to work around canvas size limitation when colouring a A4 comic?

I would like to use ArtRage on the iPad to colour the ink sketches for a graphic novel.
However, the sketches are A4 size, and at 300dpi, each is still 2480 x 3508 pixels large, beyond ArtRage's 2048x2048 limitation.
I fear going below 300dpi would give me quality problems further down the line.

Have others encountered this problem, and found any workflows to work around this?
I can't really think of any except to split the image, but maybe someone has come up with something that I haven't thought of yet.

The most obvious workaround, of course, is separating the page into its panels and editing them individually.
I will do that where possible, but many of the pages have full size or 3/4 size panels so it's not always an option.
