    Baby Elephant Underway

I watched a very clever pencil artist on TV the other night who does lovely baby elephants and other wildlife in Graphite. That got me going, so I sourced a cute shot off the Web, intending to do a Watercolour style. Too fiddly for the detail I wanted, so have progressed to undercolour washes and Pencil and Wax Crayon on top. So many wrinkles! Dinner and wine methinks and hit it again later.

There is more to it than the head, but I didn't want to resize, so just did a snippet.

Thanks Saphire, I'm having lots of fun.

I've spent quite a bit of time correcting tones and developing the wrinkles. I will go back to the head soon, now I've leaned more about how to soften everything up, and still have all those creases. Finally, I'll need to place him in some sort of background. I might put Mum's legs there, but that will be a lot more work. Also, I love those golden eyes that baby elephants have, so will try and incorporate those in to give him some personality.

It is coming on really well, certainly a challenge with all those wrinkles in the skin.
Look forward to seeing the completion.

I think the little guy is pretty much done now, so will move on to the background. Maybe some sand and rocks...... hmmmm.

You have done a stunning job on the baby. I tend to get stuck on backgrounds, not wanting to take the focus away from the main subject so try and do very simple ones.

I'm pretty happy with it now, though I always go back in and fiddle some more. I chose a simple background, and hopefully have given him some weight and a position in his world, though an addition of some soft rocks behind him would an improvement methinks. Don't know.

What great fun, I might do another! ..... though I think housework is screaming to be done beforehand.
