Box with X instead of paint strokes

Hi, I'm using an iMac OS Lion and Wacom Bamboo touch and Pen tablet. I'm just getting to know (and love) Artrage but now I'm stuck. I wanted to use a ruler to create a perspective point but once I move the ruler into place I found every time I tried to paint on the canvas a little window containing a box constructed with dotted lines (looks like one of the select tools to me) and an X pops up and I can't put down any color. I don't know what I did, what it means or how to change it back. Help is appreciated. Thanks!

I think that means you are working on a layer set to invisible

Yep. That happened to me a few times.

If it has a dashed box, you have created a zero pixel selection. Go to Edit -> Deselect all to remove the selection and you should be able to paint normally.

The most likely way this could've occured is 'select all' followed by 'invert selection'

    I hope this helps!
