    Swan Song

"I have seen salmon swimming upstream to spawn even with their eyes pecked out. Even as they are dying, as their flesh is falling away from their spines, I have seen salmon fighting to protect their nests. I have seen them push up creeks so small that they rammed themselves across the gravel. I have seen them swim upstream with huge chunks bitten out of their bodies by bears. Salmon are incredibly driven to spawn. They will not give up. This gives me hope."

Don't know if I can ever order salmon again. . . becoming a totem animal in a way. You're fishing out some remarkable qualities that they possess. . . even inspirational. . . which I had never thought I would be looking at in a fish. There's a little of Hemmingway's writer spirit in you, I think.

Oh, great painting. Fascinating to make it so out of focus. . . .

PD.. I think D Akey is right there is a bit of Hemingway in your writing and your art... powerful yet cleanly simple...

I'm glad you wrote the story else I wouldn't have understood what it was by just 'Swan Song.' Very nice!

I meant to end the description of the painting..."This gives us hope and empathy for a species facing similar fates..

The narrative is heartbreaking....the painting so expressive ! A lot to think about
. Do we let nature take it's coarse or intervene and make things worse??? I fear we are on a path of destruction , however we go anymore. Sorry for the doom & gloom.

    Shibui:

I was trying to comment on the nature of life as struggle. That we are somehow separated from all the rest of the creatures only spells out this fantasy. There is something hallow in a salmon. Someone we recognize.

But you are right in your negativity. No one will give up one thing no matter how desperate the situation has become.
