Putting a grid on a reference image

Some people use grids on their reference images to help with of their art. I didn't find a tutorial on this, so I made up a quick one for ArtRage Studio / ArtRage Studio Pro.

I will be using the grid script called grid.arscript from AndyRage (http://www2.ambientdesign.com/forums...highlight=grid). Make sure you download and save the scrip in a place you can find.

Launch ArtRage Studio / ArtRage Studio Pro

Click File>Import Image File
<This option will create the workspace the size of the image>

Select the image you want to put a grid on
<The image I selected is an apple I found on the internet>

Click on File>Play Script
Select grid.arscript

Select the number of squares across and down
<I selected a 10x10 grid>
Click OK
<You should see the image with a 10x10 grid>



Click File>Export Image File
<This will save the grid on image for later>

Click File>New Painting
Select options for the new painting

Open reference of grid on image



Click on File>Play Script
Select grid.arscript

Select the number of squares across and down
<Make sure it is the same as the grid on image - 10x10 grid>
Click OK
<The grid is on a separate layer. Make sure you don't paint on the grid layer >



If you want, you can open reference of original image without all the lines



There we go. Start painting.

How did you get two copies of the reference open?

I usually use my shortcut key (which can be changed), but here's a couple of ways to open the Reference panel, to add them via the "New" button:

1st Method:

1 - Click on View...

2 - ... the select Reference Panel, to open the Reference Panel.

3 - On the Reference Panel, click on the "New" button, to add additional reference images.

2nd Method:

A - Click on the Reference pod to open the Reference Panel

• NOTE: If you haven't already selected a reference image, clicking on the pod will directly open your image browser instead, because AR assumes that you're planning to open your first reference. Otherwise, the Reference panel should appear.

B - Click on the "New" button, of the Reference panel, to open a new reference image.

This is great stuff. Something I learned early on that helped me with drawing. It's a highly excellent tool.

If you have a particularly large image, sometimes it's good to use a numbering system. But I'm not sure how one would do that in a digital format. I've only done grid-work on paper.

I know nothing about scripting, but maybe this script could be changed to have a painting layer of any format with a grid that shows the golden section (golden rectangle, golden spiral, whatever)

This is no critic, just thinking aloud,hoping someone could do this.....
I think that would be a great addition.

nice presentation fugu-guy. nice images.

for me the file didn't download but it opened in another tab of my browser.
so I just copied the script. opened notepad and pasted the script in.
then I saved it as a text file with the title being grid.arscript.
then I chose play script in artrage from the file menu and found the file.
it worked perfectly from there.

ArtRage allows multiple references to be displayed at the same time. If you want to paint a bowl of fruit, you can have references of all the different fruit as well as the bowl. This way, you don't have to have find a reference image of a bowl with fruit in it.

About any other useful scripts, I have not checked any of the scripts that are available. I ran across the grid script because I use grids to make sure the faces on my portraits are symmetrical.

Thanks for the mini tutorial on how to put reference images on the ArtRage workspace. I'm a point and clicker. I didn't even know about the shortcut key.

Anyone know whether this should still work in ArtRage6? I've downloaded it and tried but it just opens a new window and prints a load of Chinese characters into it.
