As to layers, what will show is what you see when you're looking at it -- or as we used to say back in the day WYSIWYG (if I spelled it out right) -- ie. What You See Is What You Get. So if you see a bird on a wire, that's what you have visible for all to see.

If you want to see what's on any of your layers you can poke 'em in the eye icon to toggle it on and off. The active layer is the one that's a different color from the others. And you can keep adding new layers so you can paint on top of everything else. (I think that's how it works). Simple and practical.
