Moving West - Chapter Lucky 13

Before the first rays of morning became visible, a gust of autumn wind sent a long since dead Maple tree crashing into the river. The sound woke Sean abruptly, and for just a couple of seconds, he was confused about where he was. Then just as suddenly, he was totally aware of his location, and what was going to happen this morning.
When Sean returned to the village from his mission to stop the kidnappers, there was a lot of celebrating among the tribe, both for his safe return, and because they knew their women would never again be in danger from those men.
The next morning, Sean presented himself to Mariska's father, and made him a formal offer of two horses and one rifle, and requested his permission to ask her to marry him. Rising to his feet, with a stoic face, Tiganche replied “Your offer is appreciated, but, unacceptable”. Realizing that his offer was far beyond what would normally be presented for even such a beautiful woman as Mariska, Sean was stunned by this answer.
From what I know, my offer is more than generous. May I ask why you consider it to be unacceptable?” Tiganche reached out
his right arm and touched Sean on the shoulder...”Certainly, you deserve an honest answer to your question.” “What kind of father do you think me to be? One who would send his daughter off with you, walking on a journey of untold miles, when she could be riding a horse?” His blank eyes started to take on a bit of sparkle, as he contined, “I am not blind Tagito (RedHair). I saw into my daughter's heart from the first day when she returned her with you. My insistence on following the tradition of a present for allowing your marriage was for two reasons only."

First, knowing you had nothing to offer at the time, allowed time for both of you to think about your futures, and be sure of what you wanted. The second reason was that I wanted our people to see that she was taking a husband that valued and respected our traditions. I would have you keep your horses, for you will have need of them when you leave here. A present of one rifle will be quite acceptable. Besides, you have already give me the greatest gift possible – saving her life. You should know that Mariska told me this very morning that she intended to be your wife even if she had to leave this village to do so. It's obvious that the two of you are to be married, and you have my blessing. I am proud to have you be a member of my family. You will be a good provider, and have proven to be a man of courage and honor.”
That was two weeks ago. By tradition they had to wait for a new lodge to be built for them before the ceremony could take place. Now, in a sacred place close to the river, they stand facing the Medicine Man as he performs the wedding ritual.
Perhaps a month earlier while hunting, Sean had found a Mohegan warrior called “Grey Wolf” deep in the woods with a broken leg. He had set and splint the leg, constructed a travois, then pulled and carried him the many miles back to the village. As a measure of gratitude and respect, Grey Wolf has loaned his ceremonial shirt to Sean for this marriage ceremony. Mariska is wearing the dress her Mother married in, and has spent time making repairs and a few improvements in preperation for this day.
At the end of his speech and his prayer to “Man Above”, the old Medicine Man touches the forehead of both Sean and Mariska, and says simply, “Forever”.

That quickly, it is over, and they are now man and wife. As the tribe members sing and laugh, the newlywed couple are escorted to their new lodge to begin their life together.
Just a few weeks ago, Sean had expected to face a cold and lonely winter. Now it appears that winter forecast has been changed to warm and cozy.

... I guess that the rest of the ceremony is going to happen in the After 9 Section ....
There's a nice fashion show going on in this painting, dear Barnburner.
Everything's fine now, but I hope we didn't come to an end of the type " ... and they lived happy and contente all over their lives" (or any other similar formula used in English for a tale happy ending).
    Panta rei (everything flows)!

No, this is merely "the end" of this phase of the story.
The movement west continues, and as it happend in the daily lives of those that lived it, events both positive and negative will be a part of the story.
Caesar, thanks for viewing and reading.

Thank you Sandy. This was a tough one for me, because, I'm still in the beginner stage as far as trying to paint people, and I must have wasted 5,000 gallons of cyber ink with all the do-overs... But, I did learn a few things that hopefully will pay off down the road.
I am very appreciative of your interest and your never failing support. Thank you my dear friend.

Heck, I'm ticked to death to hear that I even have a "style".... Seriously, I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the chapter, and I dearly appreciate your kind comments. Thank you.
