    Enchanted Mesa

Enchanted Mesa was my favorite spot in New Mexico to visit while I was a student at the Univ. of NM. About an hour's drive west of Albuquerque, it is situated on Acoma Pueblo land. Acoma is the famous "Sky City" a place where the People built their village on the top of a sheer rock cliff. Enchanted Mesa is a similar cliff nearby and is rumored to be the original site of the town, centuries before the Spanish arrived. The mesa rises about 400 feet straight out of the high country desert plain.

I dug out an old Poloroid I took back in 1978 and used it as a reference picture (cranked the color up a bit to offset some fading)

    Very nice job Al..
I saw it as a kid on our way to visit folks in Calif.
Your painting gave me a "refresh" on that memory.

Well hello Don Juan. I think this is the town that Mescalito hails from.

    Very vibrant. A separate reality.

Excellent application of your palette sensibilities that really move into grandeur and splendor. Seeing this sort of alludes to the lost Cities of Gold. . . And is definitely an travel poster for the artistic eye.

Univ of New Mexico? Well that explains a lot!!! lol This is excellent Al! I love to see how you work your colors in nature. Fascinating technique! The use of value from the color intensity always surprises me at the depth that is captured! Your work always gets me thinking outside the box!
