Really great! I love the whole thing.

This isn't a criticism, but sharing something I became aware of eventually in painting. While this painting works great with the green background, you can see how contrasty it appeared against the white canvas. I have painted so often that I have done it many ways, and sometimes missed the value of following a procedure.

I have many times been hugely disappointed when I noticed that the color and values in a certain part of the painting I worked on shifted like crazy when I put a new tone around it.

Anything against white creates a strong contrast. But then if you put a background tone of say a middle value, or has a lot of contrast in it, it will most definitely affect your subject. Slapping in a roughly accurate temporary level to work on top of may serve you. I also found that putting something in there that establishes the darkest dark, even a black dot, helps to insure that what you're working on will sit well in the overall picture.

What you have works perfectly which makes me wonder if you hadn't worked over a toned background, making my comment unnecessary. Or perhaps your instincts were good. Or you're copying something that's already been worked out so you know it will work. That's a little different from painting something from the ground up. Not about undervaluing one's process, but going from scratch, it's a rather important thing to give it a tonal context early on so you can keep your value and color relationships in the proper balance.

I really love this image and can't wait to see it done. Realism is really working here. And the subject rocks my world.

D Akey Thank you very kindly
The only Ref I have is of my friends hubby which she set up as a stock image on Deviantart(I will post a small pic for you to see) all the rest is being done from my imagination. The temporary background was mainly because the white was giving me a headache so I toned it down.but I have always been able to colour match quite well so that comes in very handy now
