my pokemons, let me show you them

I sketched these Great Horned Owl characters as submissions to the Phylomon Project (phylomon.org). It's a neat little project run by a community of artists. Their goal is to collect art and assemble a Pokemon-like card game that helps familiarize kids with real plants and animals.

Apparently someone did a study showing 8 year-olds are very adept at identifying 120+ Pokemon characters, but when it came to "photos of real flora and fauna (animals and plants that lived in the children's back yards) the results were simply horrendous." Its an open project and anyone can submit art. I thought the idea was cool enough to warrant a plug on these forums .

Very good idea and cool images to go by.

Isn't it interesting? My daughter loved them, and my son is really into them. When teaching my son I often make paintings and we discuss them-anything with vivid and smooth rounded edges with a non interfering backgrounds seem to appeal to young ones, hey to me too! Great images and great work Monkeyscience!

I particularly like the second one and the treatment of the background around the moon.

No matter how much I paint or how many images I see, it always amazes me how a few purposeful brushstrokes with variations in shade and direction can add so much life to what might otherwise be an uninteresting flat area of color.
