Cool Sunset - Striking autumn light that enlightens a Roman bridge

Mosa Trajectum is the ancient Roman name for Maastricht, Netherland's most southern city. The romans settled here and built this bridge more than 2000 years ago. Ofcourse it has been rebuild several times but the original roman design has been respected. This popular, nowadays pedestrian and bicycle bridge is later babtised as the Saint Servaas Bridge, named after the city's holy Servatius. His statue can been seen on the front of the bridge overlooking the river Meuse (Maas).

I loved to make this painting as it was a big challenge to make the late afternoon light golden, to keep life in the shadow parts and to select a fine matching coloured sky. Next to this it was very difficult to make the exact crop of the total painting to get this spectacular composition.

Btw this is also the bridge which I crossed twice, 4 days a week, 5 years long when I was a student at the Maastricht Art Academy.

Made with oil brush and a little knife. Hope you like it aswell.

This post prompted me to look back through your earlier posts. I can only describe your treatment of light as masterful.
