Totally ticked off at Art Show

Entered 3 paintings of my digital art in local art show. They called each a digital image - not art.

Next year they are going to have a category for digital art. Tried to tell me I wasn't painting so I got a little bit adamant.

I'll stack up artrage to their traditional methods anyday. I've done both.

Their heads are up their ........

    That is ridiculous!

When I went to art school for a short time, we were learning how to sketch then paint some sort of predefined landscape. I was about half way done and the teacher came over and said quote:

"No no no, you're not using the brush strokes you learned earlier."

ME: "Oh I know, its just the way I paint."

"Well it looks like c*ap. Its either our way or no-way, alright?"

As you would imagine I quit the class the very next day, I have always hated someone telling me what is and isn't art.

Back to your post, it just goes to show how many people truly don't know the definition of "Art" nowadays.

    Cheers!

The jurors were art professors from local college.

And when I was being "adamant" to members of the art guild, they had no clue was digital painting was.

Talk about still living in the age before computers. The best art I've seen lately is done digitally.

Because I don't lay paint on a canvas, I was told it "couldn't be a painting."

Seems to me I'm painting when I apply strokes just like I did traditionally.

    Sheesh!

I wonder if bakers in the 20's (or whenever) were told their cakes were not cakes because they used an electric mixer?

I get this all the time, Judith. "Oh, it's done on a computer, it's easy like that !"
As if there is an "art-button" on my keyboard...
Just say: "Rage It", because we already know it's art.

No didn't have time because I entered at last minute. Actually, I just wanted to increase awareness of digital art. I'm the only one who does this in the Guild.

But when I asked about had it been on canvas in my conversation, they said it wouldn't matter. "It wasn't a painting."

My jaws tightened at that point and that's when they said they would have a new category next year. Dang straight they will

The guy even told me he wouldn't allow an artist in that did wood art because he used a pattern.

So using a photograph or lightbox is any different?

The artist who won most of the awards, goes out and takes photographs of our gorgeous landscapes and then paints it exactly on canvas. I'll almost bet he uses a projector for his sketching. And he's telling me I'm not painting. Mine, at least, came out of my head!

That sucks Judith. They must be living in the dark ages still. And I wonder why they decided to have a "new category" next year? Isn't art just art, whether it be digital or traditional?
