    Graphics related opensource applications

So since I can't see a thread already I thought I'd post some links to my favorite opensource applications related to graphics.

I'm a big fan of opensource(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opensource) software particularly when it comes to my hobbies and interests as its obviously free, safe and usually well supported with documents etc.

    The GIMP
    http://www.gimp.org/
Windows + linux, image manipulation software, tablet friendly. Not quite photoshop but works well.

    Blender 3D
    http://www.blender.org/
    Comprehensive 3d modeling and rendering.

    Color Scheme Designer 3
    http://colorschemedesigner.com/
If your color theory is a bit pants and you want to dabble with some colors then this is the webpage for you. It can simulate various medical conditions to see what your colors will look like.
You can export your colors in various formats (photoshop or plain html)

    CamStudio
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/
Record your screen + webcam + audio to a movie or SWF for playback on the web. The Flash export works really well. You can change various settings such as auto pan, annotations and playback speed (timelapse) etc.
Ideal for all you experts wanting to do tutorials hint

    ArtRage
Not opensource, but a free one exists and the full version costs peanuts.

    Others...
<loads> you can always pm me or reply to this list, I'm happy to point you in the direction of something as long as its free/opensource.

    have fun.
I live in a tecno world. A world of precision, accuracy and finites.
Art is the opposite of that for me. I dont expect to be good and that is not my aim. I want to enjoy it and let my inner artist define its own art... here's hoping, where do I begin.....

One impressive alternative I have been looking at lately is http://aviary.com/
It's google-docs for graphics... Check it out.

I have never seen anything like it in the way the interface is. Well, maybe except the first time I met ArtRage.

    Another Windows alternative is:
    Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/index.html)

    hi,

here's a little update of the list

mypaint (http://mypaint.intilinux.com/) - absolutely worth a look. - nice brushes, like pencils, image mirror capability &c. (win / linux.)

for vector image creation and editing check out inkscape, theres nothing better out there for free, (www.inkscape.org) (win / linux)

Blender updated to 2.5, amazing animation/compositing/fx tool for win and linux.

sculptris (http://drpetter.se/project_sculpt.html) is a work in progress sculpting tool, which even now looks and works very fine. (only windoze at the moment, but it works in wine too.)

for the traditional animators there's pencil (http://www.pencil-animation.org/). very nice animation tool, with layers and onionskins. (win / linux)

By opensource I assume you also mean to include "free".

Here are a few of my favourites.

Wood Workshop (...free seamless texture editor that specializes in the creation of seamless wood textures"): http://www.spiralgraphics.biz/ww_overview.htm

"Sweet Home 3D is a free interior design application...": http://www.sweethome3d.eu/index.jsp

"TopMod3d is a free, open source, portable, platform independent topological mesh modeling system that allows users to create high genus 2-manifold (watertight) meshes." Use it to save your model in *obj and render in Blender (or any other 3D app for that matter): http://www.topmod3d.org/

"Alchemy is an open drawing project aimed at exploring how we can sketch, draw, and create on computers in new ways": http://al.chemy.org/

    Fractal Flame renderer: http://www.apophysis.org/

"An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format": http://www.inkscape.org/

"ShapeShop is a new 3D modeling and design tool with a fun, easy-to-learn interface. Sketch-based shape creation and editing tools make it simple to quickly translate your ideas into a 3D shape, and drag-and-drop decal compositing makes texturing simple. Best of all, ShapeShop is free!": http://www.shapeshop3d.com/

"Bricks'n'Tiles is designed to create photorealistic textures for high quality 3d content by using advanced texture synthesis algorithms. If you have a picture of a brick wall you can now make your own perfectly seamless brick wall texture in a couple of minutes": http://www.bricksntiles.com/textures/

    Have fun!

Try Pixia and Phierha as alternatives paint programs.

But ArtRage is still the best I have used.

This software isn't open source but it's free. I really enjoy Photo Plus SE and there is Draw Plus:
