ArtRage 2.5.20 - Intermittent Failure to Save in OSX Leopard.

    Hi,

    I'm having fun with ArtRage 2.5.20 on a MacBook (2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667 MHz DDr2 SDRAM).

ArtRage has, on a couple of occasions, failed to save my new work to a layered document (36 Layers, 300DPI, 7 inches by 9 inches). Not every time, but occasionally and for no apparent reason.

Any idea what might be going on?

    Thanks.

    Hi there!

Do you get any sort of error message when this happens? If so, what is the text of the message? Are you saving to a local folder or a network location?

ArtRage 2.5.20 - Intermittent Failure to Save in OSX Leopard

    Hi Dave,

    thanks for responding.

No error messages, and each time the saves were to the boot disk.

As I recall though, (and fortuitously); each time revisions failed to save in ArtRage, I had immediately prior to this saved the the project as a psd (PhotoShop) image. All the layers, including revisions, arrived intact in PhotoShop but were not present in ArtRage after doing a Save and Quit.

Maybe it has something to do with saving a large, layered, Hi Res file to PhotoShop?

    All best.

There was a bug in a previous version of ArtRage that could cause it to have problems saving when the file had been previously exported as a PSD file, it got confused as to whether the file had been saved or not.

If you select Save As after Exporting a PSD file, and save the ArtRage file over the original .PTG file, does that help? To play it safe, save as a different file the first couple of times just to see what it does.

One other question relating to this: If you export to a PSD file, then make a mark on your ArtRage canvas, Undo it, and Save, does that work? It's possible that exporting the file as PSD is incorrectly telling ArtRage that the file has been saved and hitting Save is not doing anything. Changing it and undoing will re-flag it as needing save so hitting Save will do something.

If that helps, we can address this in the next revision.

ArtRage 2.5.20 - Failure to save following a PSD export in OSX Leopard

    Hi Matt,

    here's the update:

    1) Any ArtRage work saved before a PSD export is OK.

    2) Any unsaved work done before a PSD export and "Saved" after the export is lost.

    3) Any work done on an open ArtRage file at any time following a PSD export is lost, even after saving.

    4) The only way to save unsaved work following a PSD export is to use "Save As". This saves unsaved work done both before and after the export.

    5) All layers are exported intact to PSD, whether saved in ArtRage or not. This is your only insurance if you forget to "Save As".

    6) The best workaround, unless you can remember to "Save As", is to "Save" before a PSD export and then Quit. Restart ArtRage if you want to continue work on your painting.

    All best ...

PS since this affects any Mac user who does work in PhotoShop, may I respectfully suggest that this thread be made sticky for the time being.

You should also find that after you have done a single Save As after the PSD export, Save will save to the PTG file. Basically, exporting as a PSD is confusing the app and it's saving to the PSD until you Save As an ArtRage painting.
