    what simple things can I do to improve this,

    Look at pictures of leather coats. If it looks like leather in the photo, there are things about it that make it look that way. And analyze what that is.

    There are all kinds of leather from suede to bomber jackets to shiny finishes.

    It helps to know what you are after, which is why I suggest using reference.

    Leather is going to be really shiny, if you use the non-suede type. There are going to be lots of areas of shine along with a corresponding shadow. Spend some time looking at different materials and try to separate the tones of color, finding out where each tone is most likely to be.

    using layer settings

    Thanks for that, yes Fun was what I was looking for.
    I have tried a few things in the layer settings, I think it looks a little closer to the shiny leather look that I am after.
    The idea for this image came from the paint my cat thread,
    when I first thought about it I was looking for a mean looking cat, but I have not got the skill to depict the emotion yet.
