    Windows XP update warning

The latest Windows Update for XP caused two of my computers to be unable to access the internet. I had to do a System Restore to get them interweb capable again. Bless you and your pointy headed little minions Mr. Gates. May a sick camel leave a gift in your swimming pool.

    Robert,

What a hassle! I just read about the latest security updates for XP somewhere, and it seems that they create problems if you´re using ZoneAlarm. Apparently, there´s a workaround that´s on the ZoneAlarm site.

Don´t know if this applies to you, but several others (probably thousands or more) experienced the same problem under the conditions mentioned above.

At least you got your connection back!
The only problem with humor is that no one takes it seriously.

Thanks Scott. I do use ZoneAlarm. I'll have to check that out.

Ok. Printed out the workaround solution and will work on that tomorrow. Thanks heaps buddy, my solution was to turn off automatic updates forever.

Hi Robert...............sorry to hear of your problem...........I used to use this on my posts "They say that when you run a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices... But that's nothing - When you run it forwards it installs Windows"

    Good one Peter.
So I installed a slightly newer version of ZoneAlarm and the updates for Windows and all is right with my world again.

My wife's on XP. Is there a way to disable automatic updates? I'm pretty sure we set some tight restrictions, but some programs demand that the updates happen or they won't work.

Hated those programs. I rather detest Real Audio for one.

    Haha. Funny Pete!

    D Akey,

Right-Click on My Computer (Ether on your desktop or start menu)
    Click Propreties
Click the Automatic Updates tab in System Properties window
You will see all the options for automatic updates

    Hope that helps.

I don't use Zone Alarm so I didn't have any problem with the last security update. But after I read this thread contacted the computer techs I bring my unit to when it needs repair and they said if you are using XP don't download Service Pack 3.
