Graphic Tablet Effect on Computer Controls

After viewing so much of the art here, I can see where a graphics tablet allows for much more detail than I could possibly create using a mouse. However, I do have another question. Is there an on/off switch for the tablet? If the tablet is always on, how does that affect the use of the regular mouse in other programs such as Word, PSP, etc.? I use a variety of software and don't want to be locked in to using the Graphics Pad controls once I've installed it.

With all the graphics tablets I know of you can still use your mouse while they are plugged in. Basically, the tablet just acts like a second mouse but it doesn't do anything when you're not actively using it. So if you pick up the stylus and move it around on the tablet the pointer moves but if the stylus isn't on the tablet it doesn't do anything to the pointer and you can still move your mouse around as normal.

    Hope that helps!
