Because he knew the cats were allowed in the bed. . . but he wasn't sure about himself, so to be safe, it was under the pillow shivering with fear.
Used to keep the door open so the cats could wander in and out. Knowing my cats, they were bragging about the sweet deal they got INSIDE the house. . . nya nya nanny goat. . . etc.
One thing led to another and the doors shut. The possum went into a coffee can and set outside. . . where he shook in place literally for hours. This was an attempt to unfrazzle the lad's psyche and bolster his confidence that there was in fact a place in the yard for him. . . REPEAT. . . IN THE YARD. . . and thus all was right with the cats.
There was one suspicious incident though. . . one of my cats was caught bringing in a live baby rat into the house. So he may have done it so show a need for himself -- a sort of seeding the cat job market, much like gas stations will sprinkle roads with nails, or exterminators will spread bugs into someone's home.

How adorable this little possum is in pretty blue bow and nail polish that
any girl would be giddy as all get out to wear while attending an Ovaltine
party. I could not help but also notice the at the ready spoon so she can
make certain that all of those chocolate nuggets are mixed to a creamy
delicious liquid confection. Your original photo was cute enough but the
added creative embellishments add a personalized touch that is quite
endearing. A most sincere thank you for posting it.
