First off, i'm not an artist, i'm a programmer so i've never taken any art classes and i'm sure everyone (from what i've seen!) can do a lot better.
(And yes I know should have used smaller paint strokes on the sand to pick it up better, but I ran out of time!)

Here's my entry for the "What can you do in 30 minutes" thread. :)

Hi Kyhwana - welcome to the forum.

That's a good idea for a thread - get people's creative juices flowing at speed.

And so far, yours is the best in the thread! ;)

20-25 minutes, some mistakes as I'm still getting used to ArtRage (not enough time in the last month or so), photo reference (was that allowed?). Water, trees and shoreline to match theme set by kyhwana.

Also showing the piece in progress nearing completion.

Now off to look after my sick cat.

I dunno, I cheated and used a photo as a trace picture (and grain)

Oh, I forgot to mention I was using a tablet (a crappy graphire)

DaveRage

I don't see tablets or reference images as a problem, whatever's fun really! Nice idea, I'll have to see if I get chance to try my hand at one later :)

Good thread. I like these speed painting threads. I haven't been a participant much in the past on other forums but it's always fun to see what people do. I took a look at that link that generates a descriptive sentence and came up with "An armored gaurdian unearths an angel in the twilight". So here is what I could do in 30 min. I clearly need practice on speed painting. It's fun though.

AndyRage

That's quite an image, Fashmir. Like something I'd expect to see in a Japanese Anime series.

Hi David it is fun to do quick stuff.
Both of these are excellent.
You do a mean leaf!

(Coincidentally, that Rock Arch was on 10 million TVs in the UK and beyond, yesterday evening. It was the definitive progam on deserts.
As a man who paints camels, you might consider the ones that eat snow!)

Fashmir those are astounding. Man, you're so talented!
The detail in the second one is phenomenal - all those spikey bits and bushy bits.
And I love the way the first one is contained by the canvas - sort of splashed there, detail on the canvas.
Lovely.

If that is the case, then I'll start lurking. My skills, compared to much of the CG Society forum, are average. I'm not looking to be a big fish because the AR pond is small. I'm just looking for community in a smaller way than CG Talk. I love CG talk but I like the "small town feel" of AR. :)

DaveRage
04-04-2006, 11:57 AM

Okay, I have a strange sense of humour - I certainly wasn't seriously suggesting you had done anything wrong, and I apologize if I came across like that.

I love your work - you're really very talented and I appreciate very much your posting here.

Hopefully we're doing the community-building thing here. We're all a family - I'm sort-of the drunk old uncle who smells of wee and scares the children.

Well, I'm not much of a painter, but here's a quick sketch just focusing on the shadows of one of the tracing images that comes with ArtRage. Pencil and a little palette knife. In retrospect, some coloured paper with a more interesting grain would've helped! :)

MattRage
04-06-2006, 04:36 PM
Okay, I'll bite as well.

I don't tend to do much painting (I spend most of my time doing pixel work rather than paint work) but I occasionally sit down and trot out something simple. Normally, these efforts turn in to paintings of aubergines, but I've broken the habit with ArtRage and did this instead while playing around with colour palettes and glitter.

Displayed here at 1/2 resolution, done in around 10 minutes (it shows ;) ).

Legends,

Although I saw the title of the sunsetsketch file before opening the link, the first thing that crossed my mind was that I was looking at an abstract picture of a person (with a green thing on them - I didn'd understand that part!).

Take a look at it again, and you might see a metallic person, with a large round face, flaming red hair, and a flowing body.

I rather like it!

dial-a-cliche, I really like "summer in the garden."

Enchanter, it's no wonder you find the time passing by so quickly, there is so much to see in your piece! I'm amazed by all that you managed to do in that time.

cym
05-03-2006, 08:35 PM
Fashmir, aha, you know the place! I made that one for another art contest at the LOTR Plaza. Rose colored eyes is a doodle, but I was thinking that it is a permanent condition, unlike glasses that can be taken off. Things have been pretty bad recently, mostly financial troubles, an old hospital bill haunting me, its heck not to have medical insurance in this country. Less than 24 hours in a hospital...chalk up $7300. Employer has kindly offered an interest free loan. And the new mouse should arrive today, so things are looking up. Thanks for your concern, it's appreciated.

bleepnik
05-06-2006, 11:32 AM
cym, glad to hear that things are looking up, and I kinda like the idea of rose-tinted vision as a permanent condition! The mountain you painted with your "crummy" mouse is just gorgeous.

Excellent submissions, everyone.

The phoenix is beautiful, it almost seems like I can see the sun right through its eye.

It's difficult to believe that the viking ship scene was completed so quickly; your artistry and skill are most (awe-) inspiring!

Hi Celithralia,

There's always one area of a drawing that makes the rest look right.

To me this time it's the left hand, under pressure and uncomfortable.
I guess that was to prop the doll up and stop it rolling over, but babies do that too. You've captured that in one line of drawing. Well done.

Maror - I'll have to say that's a first that someone associated my name with that. ^_^ It always reminds me of mineral water from that label Peron or something or other, heh.

This one is my 30 min one, just a quick sketch. Reference of Audrey Hepburn used. Used Chalk for this one.

Quick and dramatic!

ArtRage is the ultimate "pad that you leave by the telephone".

It also, in the right hands, produces true, planned and thought out masterpieces.

Hei, Mary!

As far as tablets go, we mainly use Wacom Graphire, Volito and Intuos here. The Graphire is Wacom's less expensive option compared to the Intuos, the Volito being available in Europe as far as I know.

Regarding drawing tablets, most of them tend to have a USB connector these days, so if your laptop has USB ports ( very likely ) you should just be able to slot one in. If you're unsure, check in the store the type of connector required for the tablet and make sure your operating system version is supported and you should be away!

An ArtRage doodle, no meaning, no implied deep thought, just done because it was possible to do it in the world's greatest painting program.

Does tracing count? It's very relaxing for me to trace photos using ArtRage. You can get as detailed or as rough as you like.

Done in about 25 minutes. Starting with a seriously roughed up version of the photo and then going back and adding a bit of detail.

Hi Erica,

If the picture is more pleasing than the photograph and making it so has made you happy then "Tracing" is as good as any other form of painting.

It's bright and beautiful to the eye.

Welcome to the "Fast Painters" area. :)

Alright, here's a 30min quicky... unfortunately it wasn't enough time to add an actual subject  , but it's been a lot of raging fun! :)

Hi Taron,

This has been here a week and nobody's picked up on it? It's such an active site, stuff gets missed, well by me anyway. :)

1. I love it!
2. May I use it as a background for another painting?

A ten minute serendipitous painting, it started as a new canvas and then just happened.
