View Full Version : Clouds and skies.

The theme is clouds and skies - You can sure do better than me, so give it your best shot.

You're welcome to add land and other scenery to give them some sense of place (they look a bit odd on their own...)

Hi Andy,
Love your cloud-it looks shy, hiding on the side like its about to scamper off somewhere :)

Selby

AndyRage

It sort of looks like congeled marshmallow... I think I was getting the hang of it toward the bottom-right of the cloud, though. I should try another one.

Selby

I think it looks great like a neat cartoon cloud...

......but if you want to wow us with more clouds i wont get in your road

Hehe.
Okay, now seriously... this was supposed to be a thread about painting clouds and skies (although the day I started it, other threads also materialized about clouds!)

Just because my clouds look like marshmallow doesn't mean yours have to look like things other than clouds.

drzeller
06-09-2006, 01:40 PM
I was going to try to make a cloud that looked like you based off your picture on the Company page on the AR website... but alas, only Tycho has clear facial shots...

So, here is my very own, from scratch, cloud.

I hope I'm not too late for this.............................

That's spooky Peter. They had this image on TV news last night. It was on a rare postage stamp that someone (mistakenly?) used to post a ballot for the last election.

The airplane was inverted accidentally making the stamp worth upwards of 200,000 US dollars.

The ballot could not be used and the sender of the stamp did not put his information on the envelope (or within) and thus the vote could not be used.

But it's funny that you painted that image 'out of the blue' as it were.

. . . um. . . you're not missing any particularly rare stamps are you? Best be more careful with your source images.

No WAY! Hahahahaha. Really?

Then somebody fooled the news services. I swear I saw it as a spot on the local news last night. We're in a huge market too. Very funny. . . ahhh.

Would explain the annonymity.

Doesn't make Peter any less telepathic. Cause he posted this in advance of the gag/story.

Peter Pinckney
11-13-2006, 06:55 AM
Hey that IS wierd ................because when I painted it I started to add an albatross and I thought "what would DAkey say about an albatross" so I changed it to the aircraft ............... spooky's right ................. but I am known to be telepathetic ........strike that.....telepathic.....why even now I know what you're thinking DA.........................STOP ! Albatros, DeHaviland, Fokker, Spad, Pfaltz, Sopwith Camel. . . any would have been acceptable to most casual observers.

Fur is right. . . Fur-lined jackets for anyone who flies one of those puppies!
Hey, maybe that's why I was crazy about open cockpits -- it's the fur.

Chalk another one up to telepathy.

Now let me get this straight. . .

You posted first as a first post, but posted without a painting.

Then you posted your first post with a painting, but it was actually your second post, though first since then, as we sorta clear the slate and start the counting over, while still acknowledging your fledgling posting.

But NOW, you are posting your second post to have a painting, but your third to be posted in the broadest sense of postinglyness.

So What it amounts to:

'In the beginning was the WORD'. Not 'In the beginning it was a dark and stormy night'. In the second, 'It was a dark and stormy night'. Then in the third and second, 'We find ourselves in Ohio on a mildly wet day'.

Nice painting in the third second. Phew. It's going to be a long time till be get to the seventh day, as I reckon it.

Rediscovered this thread!

I have a folder named AR Skies because I always paint the sky first which makes things easier for me as I don't use layers. Sometimes the sky is as far as it gets for the time I have and so I save and go back later to complete a painting. They are all from imagination so really the sky dictates the rest of the picture. Here are some

beautiful ones Silvy and Peter Stephen and all others. I found a very simple way to make clouds in artrage3 using a sticker I made called fluffy clouds along with minor touches of spray tool for tinting and the heavy blurred ice palette knife. Boxy, the real magic is not in the sticker but inside that heavy frosting palette knife engine which is just amazing... but

here's the sticker and preset.

use the soft blending brush sticker and the fluffy clouds preset.
then I go over areas with the heavy frosting preset on the knife.
I also included the airbrush preset I use for tinting and making small cloud chains.

gzairborne,
I hardly EVER venture in here but noticed this "Clouds and Sky's" thread
and just had to stop and visit. The paintings presented here by our
talented artists are just wonderful, many amazing interpretations of the
sky and all of the amenities that it holds. All who care to lift their
heads and paint brushes skyward have posted many inspirational works
here. I feel like a kid in a jet stream candy store while enjoying the
"view." :)

The untitled piece that you are referring to (above) is so beautiful, the
design, blending and colors are a visual delight and the added wisp of a
rainbow completes the dreamlike scene. Just love this and will start
looking for that often referred to pot of gold when no one else is watching
... finders keepers as they say! ;) :)

I've always loved clouds. Especially during my childhood when I played a lot outside I often look up into the sky to admire the clouds. They tell the present and predict the future weather. Silverlined clouds, high towering clouds, aircraft that cut their way through the clouds...amazingly nice. In 2005 I was completely fascinated by the evening light and yellow, orange and purple coloured clouds in the tropic hemisphere of Mauritius...

Painting clouds is great: you can do it wild but also gently: like the situation of the weather that clouds tell you. Clouds give depth and dimension to a painting. They are part of a landscape. In countries with a lot of water like Holland, the clouds absorb the colour of the landscape. Canals, lakes and rivers reflect the sky light and send it back to the clouds. Clouds that have often nice pale colours. Dutch painters are famous because of their cloud filled master pieces.

Some cloudy ArtRage paintings from my hand . Enjoy.

You have done fine work with these.
For what it may be worth, I'll offer a couple of ideas
that you might find helpful.
If you have the clouds on a different layer than the sky, you might try using the pallete knife on low pressure, to round out, and thin, the bottoms of the clouds.
If they are all on the same layer - start a new layer, take the glitter tool on low settings, same color, and sprinkle a little color around the bottoms of the clouds, then use the pallette knife.
Another thing I have found to be helpful, is to take the eraser, on a low pressure maybe 2 to 4 %, vary the width to suit the situation, and use it to thin down areas that you are not satisfied with. Helps to give them that soft look.

Hope you find these to be of some help.

Just now about 10 mins did a quickie to lift up my friend's spirit and energy that has been sick for long time. :)

Oil paint, cloud use eraser (the white is oil paint) this time with already blue background, knife and stencil for bird, all are AR4 presets stuffs. just change different setting on oil brush. not really paying much attention on the waves direction on this quickie, i just know the bright sky can cheer up my friend :)

Sometimes it's hard to believe we all live under the same sun and sky. These are all wonderful skyscapes. It inspired me to do this. I'm not sure if I've finished with it yet.

A while ago someone on these forums recommended the tutorials and Photoshop brushes of artist/animator Aaron Blaise. Wanting to speed up my workflow, I've since bought a few of his brushes wondering how well they would work in Artrage. I can't be certain if they work 100% as they're designed to, but I'm loving his cloud brushes in particular. They're so easy to use that I actually feel like I'm cheating. Just, sometimes you don't really want to spend an entire day painting a sky. If that's you, I recommend his brushes for use in Artrage! They work a treat.

He releases tutorials on how to use each brush set and I haven't actually watched his tutorial on clouds yet. I'm sure when I get round to it I'll be making better skies than this, which was knocked up in a couple of minutes. From what I've seen on his promo tutorial he makes a lot of use of the dodge and burn features of Photoshop, as well of as the brush-shaped erasers, which are features I'd love to see in Artrage, but you can still make great skies with these brushes in Artrage -- just not necessarily 'photorealistic'.

Here's his website (https://creatureartteacher.com/product-category/tutorials-lessons/brush-texture-sets/).

(His trees brushes are great too, though I mucked around to change the settings of some of them after importing them into Artrage. P.S. I have no affiliation...)
