View Full Version : Paint an emotion...

06-04-2006, 01:34 AM
Here's my idea for a themed thread.

Produce some tangible image of an emotion.

06-04-2006, 01:40 AM
...and here's my contribution...

I suppose I could have also tried to paint a 'green eyed monster' :)

(this picture could also belong to the one-hue or the 1-hour projects)

Nice idea for a project thread.

That mixture of line and paint is very effective.

The face and posture say it all. Very nicely done.

06-05-2006, 02:04 PM
Hi Maror,

Very nice effect. To me, the expression on his face is a mix of fear and regret. Like he just broke the principal's window and know he's gonna be found out soon.

06-05-2006, 04:58 PM

Hi. Good art project idea. I make one (some kind of emotion?).

06-06-2006, 10:08 AM

An emotion but I don't know what it is?

Hey Charlie,

Perhaps your's is disbelief ?

Really great pics, everyone!

06-06-2006, 07:02 PM
empty_chilli, good call. I was just about to post that very word. Charlie, he looks like he's thinking, "Wait, wait, wait... I'm sorry, you did WHAT?" =]

This is an awesome art project. Fantastic submissions, everyone, thanks for posting!

Come on AndyRage, I'm waiting for you to paint... rage

06-07-2006, 09:04 AM
If I tried, it would end up as a painting of 'frustration' instead.

Aged P

Hi Selby,

I think Chaotic is too pretty to be a negative emotion.
It reminds me of chocolate wrappers made into a collage. It's what we did while the rest of the world seemed to be doing scratchback with crayons!

06-07-2006, 09:31 AM
hehe-thanks AgedP :) -chocolate wrapper collage sounds fun-i was with everyone else doing crayonscratchback but it sounds like i missed another fun one.

i was thinking of it as 'chaotic' as in -when your not unhappy but more overexcited and running in a million directions at once, trying to do a bit of everything and making a mess as you go cause your not sticking to any plan or order...i agree though I may have made it look a bit too appetising

..was thinking of a dear friend when i did it, shes lovely but chaotic to be around and at the end of the day you do feel like you've been trying to keep up with a bunch of high bounce rubber balls dropped from a big hight like in this ad http://www.bravia-advert.com/

06-08-2006, 02:18 AM
Selby, I really like queasy (the painting, not the feeling). I think I get what you intended with chaotic. How about... exuberance?

06-08-2006, 04:02 AM
This thread is fast becoming a favorite for me to check in on. I wish I wasn't so busy at the moment. I want to play too. Maybe a weekend evening.

06-08-2006, 05:10 AM
Selby, I think queasy makes me thing of dizzy!

I liked that you created the emotions using no references to people.

06-08-2006, 06:55 AM
Ok, here's mine.

Do you know what path to take to reach your goal?

(And remember, I'm a tracer, not a sketcher... it only looks like I'm in a first grade art class!) :D

Fashmir said:

Fashmir I want you to contribute too, desparately. No not the emaotion desparately :) Well, if you want to. But I know how great yr work is, and would love to see something from you too. How about curiosity ?

06-08-2006, 01:08 PM
thanks gita-

mmn think your right its chaotic-exuberance :)

Selby, I think queasy makes me thing of dizzy! ..yep..thats prety much how i feel when i get queasy from a big boat or something i see the lovely countryside over the edge but it moves and refuses to stayput and makes me dizzy :) I like your rainbow paths to goals they're neat

06-09-2006, 05:23 PM
ok two more emotions

today we draw avarice and happiness

06-09-2006, 06:15 PM
Happiness is just perfect!

- Gita

06-09-2006, 07:23 PM
<Heavy sigh> There are so many nice emotions. I'm just not feeling them today. I decided to spend a little time and draw an old enemy. Smoldering anger. It sits in the heart blocking the spirits path and blowing out the lamp of the mind. Unchallenged or un slaked it grows into monsters much worse, lasting and destructive. I've found that its energy is well used in physical tasks, like chopping fire wood, or mowing the grass. It soon gives way and the influence of peace surrounds and dissolves it away.

06-10-2006, 12:09 AM
Fashmir, I'd know that creature anywhere. I spent a few hours with him yesterday, in fact.

Your words were well chosen, also.

Today, I upgraded my, famous manufacturer, security software.
It did not go well.

Hence Frustration and Rage!

06-11-2006, 07:38 PM
Here is envy. A close cousin of greed, envy tries to block the goodwill twins felicitation and cheer. Envy is weak though, and if not joined soon by malice and self pity usually backs down. Even if envy steps forward backed by these and other siblings of ill will, the mother of goodwill, if strong and well fed, can defeat them all. Her name is gratitude.

06-12-2006, 03:56 AM
Fashmir, there is both a poet and an artist in you. You add a great deal to these forums.

06-12-2006, 05:06 AM
drzeller- Thanks for your kind words. I find this thread to be one of my favorite notions for community sharing and discussion. I firmly believe that to truly respond to others we must know ourselves. I've noticed things have slowed down a bit over this weekend. I hope this thread picks up speed again as we go into the week. I'm loving all the emotion posts people are sharing. I'll eventually share some of the softer gentler ones.

06-12-2006, 07:00 PM
Fashmir-I love the way you've shown 'Smouldering Anger' and 'Envy' and I cant wait to see how you show us mother 'Gratitude' ready to beat them back :) wonder if she'll bring her daughters 'harmony' 'peace' and 'grace' with her to watch her work

AgedP -top job on 'frustration and rage'-i had a horrid day before i saw your rendition and felt cheered up when i did imagining you painted that on the wall of the house of the person bugging me...you would never do it,nor would i ... but it was fun to imagine for a minute and I felt so much better afterwards i forgot to be cross

06-14-2006, 05:30 AM
Envy is amazing. The being's face reminds me of the denizens of that town in that episode of The Twilight Zone where "normal" was "strange." Ah yes, here it is, The Eye of the Beholder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eye_of_the_Beholder).

- Gita

06-14-2006, 09:49 AM
This is an old one, line art done in Painter, but it is painted in ArtRage.

And just which emoution is this? It looks like a combination of shocked and repulsed, with maybe a touch of fear.

No... no... I get it... it's someone that just saw the pricing for Photoshop and Painter!

06-15-2006, 01:08 PM
These are so awesome =) I'd missed reading this since I came back and really enjoyed looking through all the different emotions people have portrayed. Great idea, neat responses!

07-06-2006, 09:36 PM
Hey Tatsuyame, I really like that piece. Here are a few suggestions of which emotion it best symbolises:

An acute but unspecific feeling of anxiety; usually reserved for philosophical anxiety about the world or about personal freedom

I somehow image angst with more red in it though :?

A feeling of ill will arousing active hostility

07-07-2006, 03:56 AM
Well, for me, blue light on black means "tranquility". If it were red it would mean malevolence :)

07-12-2006, 11:26 AM
Hello artragers and artragettes- today for your perusal we have
eminent explosion..this is the emotion of rage barley contained

Aged P
07-12-2006, 06:16 PM
My family would say you had painted me. That makes me so angry!!

07-12-2006, 07:13 PM
Selby- That does indeed suggest supressed rage but it also has enough humor in it to be really funny. It reminds me of a grade school teacher that we kids used to laugh at when she got angry because she looked so funny. It wasn't her fault she looked hilarious and it wasn't our fault that we couldn't help laughing. She would just get more and more angry. Thanks for the memory... I think. :)

07-18-2006, 10:55 PM
thanks AgedP and Fashmir  its nice to have you look in...embarrasing ly its a bit what i look like if i get very cross..sort of puffed up and silly..then again its good when i realise how silly I look I often stop being cross as im too busy laughing

heres some new emotions for all to peruse we have joy and enticed

07-18-2006, 10:59 PM
and we also have the rush of first love ( inspired by what a young friend is going through at the moment ) and melancholy

07-20-2006, 10:22 PM

07-21-2006, 09:37 AM
Cym-that enchanting...hope looks like a cuddly sort of fluffy rainbow climbing up the tree..i expect that when i reches a little higher the whole tree will spring into life and bloom its prettiest leaves :D ..a lovely one to start my day with

07-21-2006, 11:43 AM
so sorry selby and cym, ive missed these ones

selby , my favs are angry person , also looks like me, when i had soemthing with hot chilli in  ,

Hi Selby,
These materialised again! I'd been looking for them.
Bright and joyful! Even Melancholy looks a bit cheerful compared with this one I've just remembered to post!

Hi Cwm,
welcome to the world of Grains!
Has Hope grown any higher?

07-24-2006, 09:10 AM
thanks Enchanter and Aged P :D

Aged P -dispair really is a goodun..mine dosent look sooo sad as sometimes melancholy is a bit 'ok' in peices, you can be sad but not bleak..but dispair on the other hand..as you've shown its dark and there seems no hope..gee you captured it well

07-24-2006, 02:40 PM
Selby, I *love* the rush of first love.

Cym, it's so nice to see you posting again! That's a wonderful piece, I love the contrast between greyscale and colour.

AgedP, despair is stunning. I've actually slowly been working on despair as well, but as usual, I've got the image in my head, but can't get it out. I "despair" of ever completing it. =(

07-25-2006, 10:52 AM
thanks G glad you liked first love...meanwhile with your painting of dispair you should just do it...i often dont have things come out how they are in my head but often if you power on anyway you find something else good comes if not quite what you imagined..besides i hope that by dint of perseverance one day things will come out more like in my head if i just keep on trying

07-26-2006, 06:41 AM
AgedP: Your painting is stark and claustophobic.....but wheres theres light..theres always hope!

good one,

G. would love to see one of your ideas materialise, in whatever form it takes on screen , go on lady :D

08-30-2006, 07:49 AM
I'm new to ArtRage and this 'emotion' challenge sounded like a good place to start! I call this "What? You want me to call tech support!!!"

I had an awful time with the color picker not picking what I wanted. Anyone have any tips?

08-31-2006, 08:31 AM

MoHei and welcome the artrage users world.

Cant help that picker, i have not been any problem with it. :?

Nice and fresh image. Do you use mirror. :D

from Heikki.

ps. Layers are quite useful at this program.

08-31-2006, 12:55 PM
Thank you for the welcome Heikki...I'm going to do my best to be an active participant!

Thank you also for the compliments. No, this is not a self-portrait. If it was.... it would be a lot scarier! LOL

09-02-2006, 03:01 AM
Hey Mary, Mary..... fancy meeting you here ! I figured I might as well add my pathetic attempt as well.

It's called "Depression" ... simply because I'm new to Art Rage and as you know .. haven't figured all this out yet... and it is depressing that I am not an instand Picasso... or Michelangelo... :D :D

Hope this uploads...Cheers

Pathetic, celeryhart! Truly pathetic.

Made me laugh.

09-02-2006, 03:53 AM
Sheesh.... !!!! Now you've really made me feel bad. I"m going to have to go back and paint a tombstone with "RIP" on it...in the background

Does this mean I'm doomed... !!

D Akey
09-02-2006, 06:39 AM
No-no-no-no-no. . .

Isn't that character depicting pathos?

Pathos = pathetic.

Paint an emotion? Remember?

It's a fine painting. . . a swell painting. . . don't be depressed or we'll be obligated to paint you.

I LOVE it. Your figure of pathetic tragedy made me laugh.

Charlie Chaplin screwed it up for everybody, didn't he. . .

09-02-2006, 06:48 AM
Actually she's probably depicting "phyco - patho " more than anything....!!!

Poor baby... whatever shall we do with her..?? Probably a few good tuts in Art Rage would help....

Okay, I"ll stop chizeling out the RIP in the headstone.... :D

Yes, good old Charlie Chaplin... ya need to turn tragety into humor or where would we be eh....?? Suppose you noticed that I do that... !! :)

09-02-2006, 10:37 AM
The last image was very amusing, and expressed what it intended :)

Here is one of my self portraits in ArtRage. I call it for Eternety.
That's the feeling I tried to express. That feeling that we are so small and the universe so big and eternal, and so on :)

Greetings!

09-27-2006, 11:24 AM
Hi all,

Aged P

I saw a TV programme where they used special lighting to show the stress and vibration in musical instruments,

Painting does it better. it gives an idea of how the music effects people tpp.

Nice concept.

09-28-2006, 01:50 AM
Selby...ever hear of synesthesia?? http://web.mit.edu/synesthesia/www/

Its a sensation where one perception is triggered by another...i.e you see a color when you hear a sound or taste the word "rose" when you hear it.
(I have a mild version of it..when I see a flashing light I hear a tone)
Your painting reminds me of what some synesthetics describe what they "see" when they hear music.

09-28-2006, 09:59 AM
wow thanks fellas :)

Enchanter-maybe its a magical one:)

Aged P -wow id have loved to see that.i think your right the best thing about art is the level of control you have to show how a thing affected you and not just how it literally was.
you made me remember a beautiful harp they have at the Questacon museum in Canberra which you play by interupting the light that shines down in beams where the strings would ordinarily be.

Rkngel-thanks:) yes i had heard of it but never known anyone who experienced it.i take it as a big compliment though because ive always thought it must be an amzingly beautiful way to see the world.

I was hoping to exorcise the demon by drawing it. :-D

This is one of my first ArtRage works...but I think it has a bit of emotion. What do you think?

D Akey
05-06-2007, 10:34 AM
My take:

Captured a the dualistic perceptions seen by the subject. Has not come to peace with the world. Feels victimized, apprehensive, powerless, vigilant. Someone watching, expecting bad news.

We all have that side of ourselves, no matter how well repressed, I suppose.

I wonder what the figure would look like when looking through the other eye.

What did you have in mind on this one?

08-02-2007, 06:33 PM
"hows the serenity?"

was feeling stressed out by a woman who abused me in traffic today because i wouldnt move forward into the intersection as it wasnt safe to do so....then i remembered that since i was obeying the rules any upset she was having was her problem not mine and i didnt have to let her get to me...so this is my serenity bubble with her agro failing to stick

08-02-2007, 07:54 PM
Clever Selby, really clever. And I'll think about what you wrote next time I get in a similar situation as yours (be abused or abuse as well, we are on both sides of the gun sometimes).

10-07-2007, 07:47 PM
Fantastic work Pai. They should be in your gallery for sure.
Love the VA Tech colors. And the brush work of the abstract 129 and the colors and imagination are fantastic... and RS 141,
both are amazing. And the last one is so fine at capturing an emotion.
Lovely work. Just beautiful.

10-08-2007, 12:12 AM
Hello Pai :)

The abstract works you have posted here are wonderful!

D Akey
10-08-2007, 05:20 AM
Very nice Pai!

The bottom drawing reminds me of a German Expressionist piece. Heavy and introspective. It's really nice in that evokes a mood. The line in a bit sensitive to the touch and the colors are muted and un-fussed-over, almost like it hurts a little to make the marks.

The abstracts are looking at the integration of detail and gestural. I think it's a good direction to explore. The artistic sensibilities are not yet rooted, but they hold lots of promise. When you do it for a while, I think it will start to pick up some of your usual soft, delicate beauty and flair. Keep exploring. It should start to make sense soon and then you can really start to embrace it more and get it to reflect your natural grace.

Amazing stretches artistically. You're doing great. :D :D :D

10-08-2007, 04:14 PM
Thank you GZ, Rowena and D Akey. :) :) I like doing some abstract after practising or using my brain too much. Maybe after that I can get better in it without even notice it. Another doodling only.

10-11-2007, 06:55 PM
I'm getting to like this thread.

10-11-2007, 07:12 PM
Very clever of you Pai, hiding away here in this that you have made into
a private studio. :D :D :D
These are lovely, but can't imagine why you don't want to post them in the gallery. Well I guess I understand really.
It is a quiet place to paint... :D
I really like the satiny texture of the second one here. Lovely.

10-13-2007, 11:00 AM
Pai, That reminds me.. I have to brush the dog.... again... Maybe RS145 should be named 'dread'

Nice work, pai. Almost feels like he's got his work cut out for him -- meaning it will be difficult making progress.

I wish him well. It will make him strong, no doubt. He doesn't look beaten. Just under pressure.

Interesting and inventive use of textures. The surface feels very dimensional.

It is great abstract work. Beautiful colors and graphics. Looks like an interesting world there. :D

Thanks, GZ. :) This was done spontaneously while listen to music "Shiva Shambho by namaste" I only used one custom stencil I made. Keep changing size and moving different positions of it. Using little bit of airbrush, oil and pencil. Color choice comes with the flow of the music. I'm not sure does it make sense to you. I just want to free my mind.

Clever! What a cool use of a stencil.

I feel drawn in by the shapes, and yet the color sort of pushes me back.

Interesting contrast.

Mechanically, it's really brilliant. I like the soft shapeless quality of the color that is harnessed by the dark lines. It is something like wrestling an idea out of the ooze.

Very cool Pai.

03-15-2008, 08:35 AM
Thanks, D Akey. :) Before there's a man's face swirling to the centre but I made it invisible (without color). This is the previous version.

03-15-2008, 08:48 AM
Hahaha. Hiding it was probably a good idea, unless you are doing a cartoon.

It's always such fun following your creative process.

03-15-2008, 12:48 PM
Fascinating image pai. The phrase "vortex of the heart" comes to mind. :)

03-15-2008, 06:19 PM
couldn't decide what to call it. .... heart on a string? teardrop confusion? So I just called it... Emotion. Did this in artrage..... spotlighted it in a photo shop.

03-16-2008, 05:00 AM
Thank you, Bob. I'm glad you spot that too. :)

03-16-2008, 05:02 AM
Hi juliediane,

That's a very nice creation. Like those poster design. I like the angle you put the outside rectangle as well as the tears drops. :)

03-16-2008, 12:55 PM
Thank you so much Pai. It makes sense now. It is good to see folks are starting to experiment more with the stencils. Very cool way to use them.

Juliediane, dynamic emotion piece. Great job.

03-29-2008, 05:55 PM
Pai, You have so many wonderful styles of painting. I love them very much! Very very beautiful :D

03-29-2008, 09:58 PM
Thanks for the kind words, Rain. :) I think I don't have a style yet..still searching.

Mirage, that's a very sad image. :(

I didn't know until today that there's "Time to Get Emotional" on the front page http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html....so thought of doing one

...this is how I look when sometimes I don't know how to draw/paint...

04-02-2008, 11:00 PM
We added the front page image today (after 2 months of work that couldn't be added to the front page) so I think you are officially our first post-post-poster! Congratulations :)

Wow. Sad, sad, sad.

You guys are going to give artists a bad name. Make them sound all depressed and such. Hahah.

04-03-2008, 11:09 AM
oh cry me a river!

ha ha... love it. best illlustration for that phrase ever. imo :D

angelg01, that's amazing. It really kinda gets it right, in some ways, doesn't it.

There's a sort of etherial emptiness that often accompanies the formerly solid place they occupied.

It's as if the image is fading into the less tangible quality of memory.

Nice work.

gotta go to the dentist in 5 mintues.
I fear the dentist :(
but that's because last time they had to send me to hospital when something went wrong there.

04-19-2008, 03:03 PM
I notice you, Gulergoehli. Very nice drawing. :)

How's your trip to dentist, idiotiQue? I also scare of that. :)

....emotion wound....

You could have given this so many different titles ... but you chose the perfect title. And like "a rose by any other name" ... it's beautiful.

04-19-2008, 05:12 PM
Pai, that one looks as if the artistic spirit and energy here at the center is getting yanked and pulled in very different directions at once. . . in that very gray colorless world.

Not only is the emotion being a stranger in a strange land, but an artist in an artless world. . .

I would call this The Victimized Soul.

04-20-2008, 03:33 PM
Hi Bob and D Akey, your descriptions are well said. I'm not good in words. That's why I learn to paint.

04-20-2008, 07:42 PM
224 is beautiful too. :D

04-21-2008, 06:57 AM
Oh Pay, this work should hang in a gallery. It's one of those
pics that forces me to stop and catch my eyes
Abstract art is most difficult to understand for me but "224"
talks to me more than thousand words can do :!:

If you express an emotinal wound of yourself i wish you
become happy very quick :D

I'm glad you're back, Pai! Even Kashmir said he was wondering about you.

Powerful image.

Is it based on the earthquake? I hope you were nowhere near and suffered no loss.

Very very good to see you again.

06-11-2008, 10:45 PM
horrible tragedy... leaves me speechless. I hope we will never forget the sorrow of so many people.
I am glad to see you back and painting Pai.
This is really a moving and brilliant abstract.

06-12-2008, 12:17 AM
Pai, so good to see you for sure! :)

I am also very sad about the recent earthquake in China... that is one powerful image you produced. It says a lot about internal feelings. ... it has that aura of depression, yet life is still in there. Awesome!

06-13-2008, 03:43 PM
Dear Pai, so glad to see you are ok, just so glad!xoxoxoxoxo

06-14-2008, 05:08 PM

my vision of Sadness, being freaked out, rage overflowing and mixed emotions. the last (smallest) was not done in art rage. it is oil on canvas

05-25-2009, 07:16 PM
Hey, very expressive, mojo. :) Who would guess that such beautiful colors could show such distressed emotion, right? But then again, such things are often hidden under a beautiful smile, aren't they? And among the beautiful things in life are the things no one wants to see. Well done! :)

06-30-2009, 03:24 PM
Wow. You guys have done some really good stuff. It doesn't look like anyone has posted anything in awhile, so thought I would. Here's one I did several years back with water pencils. Fit this thread perfectly I thought.

It's named Life's Emotion.

d.quanghuy, those paintings are fabulous. I especially like the 2nd one - very expressive work. :)

07-15-2009, 11:26 AM
I have more misery art. I enjoyed the others! Bringing out emotions in art is what art is to me. This is too not deep. I'd rather really go much deeper into the sadness inside.

07-15-2009, 11:28 AM
I have worked on this with artrage today. I am new to artrage, like a month. I think i like the original sketch better.

07-15-2009, 11:35 AM
What can I say. Great work!

07-15-2009, 12:31 PM

Lonelyness and anxiety

07-18-2009, 12:11 PM
Amluan, that is very powerful.....haunting.

Here's my contribution...a young family we're very close to moved away a year ago and the father had a nervous breakdown at work this week. We watch and wait to see if he will come out of this ok. There is an unspoken, futile desire by all involved to cast blame somewhere.

Very good Hops. When this happens we must count to ten and then realize that we only have one day, yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery, today a gift...that is why it is called the present. Now, if I could just learn this.:D

I'm happy to see there are places for members to post artwork, and think this is a wonderful idea for a thread.

I recently purchased 2.5 and have been having a great time experimenting with it. I recently completed this little abstract using the paint tubes and pushing paint around on the canvas, mixing some of my favorite colours. It is very dark and rainy where I live right now, so the bright colours lifted my mood. I call this one "Delight" - because that's how I felt when I finished! :D
