Hi to all, im new to the forum and Artrage, im working as concept artist in the game development company. This is speed-paint for Conceptart's forum. From now on i'll be putting my stuff here, if you don't mind :)

11-03-2007, 05:41 AM
Great style :)

11-03-2007, 07:49 AM
Very cool. It works well. Love your style. Welcome. :D

Post away!

Very enjoyable.

:D :D :D

11-03-2007, 08:56 AM
very cool

11-06-2007, 05:39 AM
Thank you guys, working with ArtRage is something completly new to me, i feel like im learning to paint again :) Here is another speedy one :)

11-06-2007, 06:19 AM
I like the rough yet precise feel about your pieces - the way you used that tool is really nice and I just like the glowing red eyes of the first one - nice work !

11-06-2007, 08:37 AM
Welcome to the forum, Borilius.
I do like the way you've implied a surprising amount of detail in your paintings, with a few well-placed strokes of a chunky tool.

11-06-2007, 09:19 AM
Hi Borilius, I like what I've seen of your work so far, your powerful use of colour and light work really well with your loose, energetic brush-strokes.

I look forward to seeing more of your work!

-Little Mike

11-06-2007, 05:19 PM
Wonderful! Agree with Andy it is amazing how you used the roller.
Fantastic style you have. These are very cool.

11-06-2007, 07:12 PM
Hi Borilius.

I like your flat brush effect. I wanted to do that. Was that brush? What is the setting?

If you don't mind sharing that is.

11-06-2007, 07:53 PM
I like these quite a bit. They somehow remind me of pixel art (the second one, anyway).

11-06-2007, 08:01 PM
...just for in the meantime kamaldollar, I am certain Borilius was using the roller brush for these paintings.

Anyway, I was just going to compliment Borilius on his superb way using this roller brush :D . I like not only how it suggests detail but also how it manages to describe a lot of action going on, but just now frozen in a split-second of time for us to observe...

11-06-2007, 09:14 PM
Thank you all, for the kind words and warm welcome :) Now to the brush - its Paint Roller with Pressure set to 0, Thinners set to 100 and Loading set to 10 /and its the only setting i change while painting/. Auto Clean is on. Thank you once again!

11-06-2007, 09:32 PM
thanks everyone.

I've tried it. That's the effect I was looking for.

Rather new at this, so I was looking for a flat tip brush setting the whole time and ignored the roller.

11-07-2007, 03:50 AM
Uno mas, ill try to change the theme for the next time :)

11-07-2007, 04:49 AM
Hi Borilius.

I seen your work also on openCanvas forum... nice to see you here!

11-07-2007, 04:53 AM
Hi uuderzo, nice to see you too :) The lack of textured brushes in openCanvas led me to ArtRage - a friend of mine introduced me to AR actually, and i really love it :)

D Akey
11-07-2007, 07:58 AM
Nice. Has the feeling of marker comps on steroids. Good for quick presentation work.

Nice feeling of texture -- glass of the helmet.

:D :D :D

11-07-2007, 09:14 AM
Very professional works to me. Simple few strokes and the details are already show. I really like the last one with the glass. :)

11-07-2007, 10:16 AM
Thank you for your comments and critics, D Akey and Pai! As my work is doing character concepts for games and sometimes time is critical, im looking exactly to this roughness of strokes, but feeling of finished work. I was working with Photoshop and openCanvas, but it was too much time consuming. ArtRage is exactly what i was looking for, taking in mind that i have much more experience with the traditional way of painting - it gives me what i want :)

11-07-2007, 11:06 AM
great stuff Borilius -really cleverly done they all demand my attention and have such great style :)

11-07-2007, 11:42 AM
It is good to hear Art Rage is working so well for you in a professional
environment. These are awesome. You are very talented to be able to do them quickly.

11-24-2007, 03:37 AM
Thank you guys! Here is another speedy, sadly i have ALOT of work these days, and i can only keep with speed-paints... hope to find some more time, and finish at least one for the Xmas holidays :-/

Fan-art "Fire&Ice"

11-24-2007, 09:46 AM
Welcome, Borilius, we have every reason to welcome a concept artist here! It's already a fascinating spread from well seasoned traditional artists over well seasoned digital ones and a whole lot of aspiring geniuses of apperantly all ages, whereby I could be wrong there, haha.

Concept artists have the spontaneity and security to put down highly creative impulses fast and with great accuracy when it comes to lighting and atmosphere as well as shape and volume, I mean the outline and actual meet of the subject. While all of it is nothing but a coarse mess, the whole message comes through and that's something to learn from for everyone here!

Excellent, muhuhah...never mind! ;)

Welcome again!

12-07-2007, 10:01 PM
Good morning everyone, here is a personal work i did these days, while resting from texturing. It was mostly an exercise with Artrage, painting different materials and light sources. Im totaly in love with it, taking in mind i have much more experience with traditional techniques, Artrage is like breath of fresh air after all the years with Photoshop.
There are ALOT of issues,i know, but i prefer moving on to the next one, than spending any more time on this. Any critics and comments are most welcome, thank you all, i hope you'll enjoy it!

12-07-2007, 10:04 PM

Stunning work, Borilius.

12-09-2007, 11:43 AM

Oooooooooooo. . . Nice!!!!!!

You not only have a good handle on metal and editing and design, you also can stylize all the elements in a picture to make it thoroughly consistent throughout -- as if we're looking through the same eye and mind that sees the world thus.

Example is that bird, with the arc of the wings and so forth, it looks perfectly consistent with the elegantly designed fighter figure. I would take this to mean that either the fighter is like a Ladyhawk, and turns into a hawk (only in the day?) kind of thing, or this bird is like her traveling companion, or she is like a hunting bird, or she is from the house that bears such a crest -- or something. They are cut from the same cloth so to speak.

I especially like how you manage to put in lots of detail but there is never a question as to the most important lines describing the body and the ones that define the most important compositional shapes, and the subdividing supportive ones that describe costume and embellishment.

It really holds it together perfectly and with a genuine design sensibility.

Brilliant. . . again.

Keep going!!! You're world class, my friend.

:D :D :D

01-26-2008, 11:51 AM
@D Akey: Thanks for all the kind words!

May i use it as title? I think it fits perfectly :)

01-26-2008, 12:13 PM
Youīre a very good drawer...And, yours works has his own style, and itīs fantastic, amazing...!!!

@D Akey: Thanks for all the kind words!

May i use it as title? I think it fits perfectly :)

In fairness, it's not mine to ask for it.

Actually, they use an 'e' on the end.

Regardless, I think titles may be open to anyone to borrow/use. The worst that can happen is perhaps confusion. Quote the title, but don't quote me on that point of law, because I don't know, I'm afraid.

01-26-2008, 10:46 PM
You called that simple sketch. I see it as execellent and professional one. :)

01-27-2008, 10:55 PM
cool work.I like your brush style. :)

01-28-2008, 01:32 AM
Immense amount of detail. Wonderful sketch !! Everything you applied fits just perfect !! Great!

01-29-2008, 11:33 AM
Wow. That is one fine drawing. Fantastic. :D

02-27-2008, 05:20 AM
Thank you guys and gals! :) Now to a something different, its cartoon character, its NOT a goblin, its SUPPOSED to be a goblin, oh well...

Johnny "The Fiddler"

02-27-2008, 06:34 AM
Great expression. Nice shading! I especially like the use of hard shadows on his jacket. Intruiging overall quality !

D Akey
02-27-2008, 10:08 AM
That's some character!

I LOVE IT!! hahaha. Really clever stylization/caricature of one look for the shady gangster from the 1920's who happens to be a demon and I love the hook - possibly related to the good Captain Hook -- the relative who went to America. I would bet he even wears spats.

02-27-2008, 11:08 AM
Welcome back and stunning comics image! 8) :D :D

02-27-2008, 07:05 PM
Incredible work as always. You are an extreme talent.

02-28-2008, 12:22 AM

High marks for great marks.

02-29-2008, 06:16 AM
I like that Johnny look. He made me smile. Your speed-paintings took me days. Good stuffs. :)

03-06-2008, 01:20 AM
@pai, D Akey: Thank you!
Here is another doodle, too much work these days, not much time for painting...

D Akey
03-06-2008, 04:30 AM
What a voice you manage to get into you paintings. German on the wall, huh? Is this a WWII theme you have going?

These fighters you portray are TOUGH looking on both sides. Lethal strength and harsh endurance are the featured qualities that come forward for me -- farm boys who would probably love to be elsewhere.

Very skilled work.

03-06-2008, 04:41 AM
awesome works, all of them.
I especially like GermanSoldier1
simply wonderfull :)

03-06-2008, 06:55 PM
Another nice one. He looks so tired and kind of miserable.

03-06-2008, 07:04 PM
You really have captured something of the fine illustration art of the 40's and 50's. This is such fine illustration work. Fantastic work.

03-06-2008, 07:29 PM
These are all stunning. Fiddler Johnny is my favorite. Very Professional. :D :D

03-06-2008, 10:56 PM
Nice display :D :D :D

03-09-2008, 03:05 AM
Superb work and superb style!!!

03-28-2008, 01:50 AM
Thank you guys! I feel flattered :)
Here is another one, some indiana type, Bob Canteen is his name :)

03-28-2008, 03:59 AM
He's nothing to do with chefs, but this Mr. Canteen is a very professional and perfectly made character! Congratulations dear mates and thanks for such really impressive show of capability and art!! :D :D :D :D

D Akey
03-28-2008, 06:53 AM
I would definitely not look at this guy and think he was clever and someone who would go somewhere despite the danger of losing.

This is the body of someone who uses strength to solve his problems and would be hard to see him as concerned for his safety. He has one gear, and that is "Charge!" BLAM! WHALLOP!

So the courage level and the rising to overcome insurmountable obstacles is not apparent in his visual presence. Jones was a sort of everyman. This guy is the Hulk.

That's only a comment on the editorial impact for the character's appearance. Editors and people who hire artists cross the line sometimes between staying close to the original and taking a franchise into a new market -- comic books in this case, I would guess.

The drawing is polished as usual. You are very skilled. I would hire you in a second were I in need of artists. Obviously you work steady.

03-28-2008, 03:58 PM
He reminds me of Rambo. Very cool man. I like your background texture. :)

03-28-2008, 04:24 PM
I love your style.

03-28-2008, 06:04 PM
I like your clean style especially in the last one. Your speed paints are cool too. I like your use of the paint roller to create highlights on some of your helmets. Good looking stuff.

04-04-2008, 01:40 AM
Thank you all for the critiques and comments!
Here is another one with process steps:

Process: /sorry for the size/

04-04-2008, 01:56 AM
Spectacular comics drawing and very interesting process steps display! :D :D :D :D

04-04-2008, 08:32 AM
Woah! Seriously rockin' squiddy!

That's a fantastic illustration. And great to see the steps as well.

D Akey
04-04-2008, 08:41 AM
Agree with the others.

This is amazing. What a wonderful design. It even has a graphic motif of curves, based on the tentacles, I guess, which sort of take the edge off this bristly character. Suggests in him some dimension and character.

Brilliant work. And thanks for showing your process.

04-04-2008, 09:02 PM
Imaginative and well done

04-16-2008, 02:03 AM
Thank you guys!!!
Here is another one, a bit of fan-art to "Firefly"/"Serenity" - the likeliness /sp?/ was lost a bit in the process. But i believe you all Browncoaters will recognize him
"Captain Mal"

Process steps:

04-16-2008, 03:47 AM
It's a pleasure stay here to look your talent...
I like your style and your knowledge too...

04-16-2008, 08:07 AM

04-16-2008, 08:24 AM
Stunning one by one!!!!

Love your style!!

04-16-2008, 10:14 AM
You are fast becoming, if not now, one of the greatest illustrators on the planet. I don't know how I missed the recent additions of Bob Canteen Squidface and Captain Mal. Fantastic work. I think they would win any contest at CG Society or Deviant Art for sure. I always thought you were amazing, but these latest ones are mind blowing great. :D

04-17-2008, 02:22 AM
Thank you guys, as long as im making people around me happy with my works, mission is accomplished :) Here is another sketch from today, some scandinavian hero type ;) Will start coloring tomorrow.

04-18-2008, 04:55 PM
Wow!! I just found this thread and all your works ar awsone. I wish I has a sucess ratio like you do for producing great works.

04-18-2008, 05:51 PM
great work. just amazing. :D

04-19-2008, 01:53 PM
Lots of stunning paintings and sketches. :) I especially like Squidface and thanks for the process images. Are these all done by Artrage only?

D Akey
04-19-2008, 02:05 PM
Even Frazetta took license with placement and proportions. The Scandinavian warrior two back has some issues.

Your mark making is fantastic, and the shapes are great -- all very convincing. The width of his raised arm is huge relative to his other arm. And his shoulder seems low.

I understand you want to feature his strong jaw by giving it some space around it. But it seems off a bit.

Anyway, for someone with your talent, I figure it was a matter of choice. But if these characters are simply ideas that are going to be refined later, then it's not an issue. The impact will be strong.

The second character page is perfect.

04-20-2008, 07:23 AM
поздрави от българия :) харесва ми стила ти,почти никога не използвам валяка на рейджа,наистина се изненадах като прочетох ченякои неща са правени само с него.

Май съм ти виждал галерията в артлайн.. Нещата ти стоят доста професионално!

04-22-2008, 08:55 AM
Thanks guys!
@D Akey: You are right in all your points, most of the issues with sketches are fixed later when i start coloring and refining, thats the moment where i make most of the changes to the original concept. Thanks again for your critiques, appreciated! :)

04-23-2008, 08:18 PM
Great additions. Always a pleasure to see some of your work. I think you grabbed the essence of Mal Reynolds very well. He looks a bit more strong and hard in his face, but that is caused by the hard shading of his face I think. Was a great series and it's a shame it has no end.

Squidface also has a great shading and a convincing line-art.

Despite that, really good sketches, looking forward seeing them in a finished colored version. Really outstanding work borillius.

04-25-2008, 03:33 AM
Two more sketches:
Continuing the barbarian theme :)

04-25-2008, 09:14 PM
Really excellent figures!

04-25-2008, 11:35 PM

Happy Easter to You, dear mate.
In our Western countries Easter is already passed since a month!

"Jumpin' Down The Running Train"

08-15-2008, 05:41 PM
Great stuff, which coming from you is no surprise to me. I especially like the western image with the poor sheriff apparently out matched by the imposing gunman. Great color, stroke work, line and use of your paper.

D Akey
08-15-2008, 06:39 PM
The might makes right concept. Personal power wins in these universes.

Some day you should visit the Armory museum in Paris. The war craft there, much of which is ceremonial, is down right surreal. Some are like bizarre mechanical prosthetics, maniacal swiss army knife style inventive gadgets for eviscerating a foe on the field of battle, hoisting his lifeless carcass on a petard and prying open a champagne cork to celebrate, all with one device. Holds great energy for the aristocratic fellows with lots of pomp, fantasy and money.

08-15-2008, 09:14 PM
Stunning work as always. Love the new western!...You are an amazing illustrator of the highest caliber. :) Love to see your work... it's amazing work.

08-16-2008, 12:44 AM
Thank you very much guys!
Fixed some things in the last one, i think i'll leave it that way.

08-18-2008, 01:15 AM
The "Chaos" one is my favorite. Even though I already like this black and white version but still looking forward to see the color version. Your drawings and paintings are very unique style with very good control in using the roller. So much to see and learn in them. Thanks for sharing the art works.

08-29-2008, 07:18 AM
Thank you Pai, you are very kind :)
Here is a quickie, just to say goodbye for a week. I'm going on vacation, and i won't have internet access - only sun and sea. Wish you guys great summer and see you all in 7 days!

Wow and double wow! If, being a self admitted rock and roller and an out

I am impressed! :)

Fan-f**king-tastic...sorry about that, it's just difficult to find something to say about your work that hasn't already been said.
I love it, wicked style. Just as i was looking through the thread I was thinking that i'd love to see the stages of your work and there it was with the "Arnie meets croc dundee" fella, nice one.
There are so many amazing and varied artists on this forum but i have to admit that the comic\graphic novel styled art is what floats my boat, i'm sailing now:D

First time seeing this thread, but your paintings are wonderful. I love the chunky roller brush style. It seems to be one of your favorite tools, and I rarely use the thing. I think I might try it more often. I have to say that as one of the brown coats, I did recognize your captain from Firefly. Great fan of that show! Too bad it didn't last longer.

I love your underwater one, chaos, amazing, amazing work, in your unique
style. Enjoyed looking through the thread.

Thank you guys for the good words!
@SCP: Yeah, i haven't updated my thread here for a while. I'm using AR mostly for my personal works and sketches - at work its Corel Painter. I just hope with the new release of Artrage 3, there will be some improvements, so i can fully move to AR at work. IMO its the best traditional media simulation, hands down - it just needs few more tweaks here and there to make it perfect.

Throw out the coffee-cup of Borilius please! I add to look at all of your wonderful works again. Thanks so much!:)

Your works show true talent! As far as AR is concerned, You will probably find it as flexible and useful as I do. I have completely stopped using my used-to-be fave (Corel Painter).

04-29-2010, 07:21 AM
Thank you, sir! Artrage is awesome, i'm trying to move away from Painter recently - it just doesn't serve my needs anymore, while Artrage fits perfectly :)

Through your art I can feel, yes feel the drama, the energy, the agony
and strength of this warrior. Tension and intrigue hangs heavy in the
air, ill winds blow incessantly, his face expresses the traumatic threat.
His mighty sword wields the defense as it gleams it's majestic power in
battle ready confidence. What a most amazingly captivating and gripping
work of art! Wow, sincerely ... WOW! :)

10-12-2010, 07:38 PM
Thank you!
Here is a quickie one, took me like 30 minutes- 1 hour to finish it. This time i used "Real Color Blending" option in AR3 and i love it. Feels much more natural when working with oils.

10-13-2010, 02:21 AM
Wow what a striking picture Borilius, the colours and the brushstrokes are sheer magic:)

Mairzie Dotes
10-15-2010, 11:01 AM
I agree, just love this piece also. The deep, rich intensity of both
artwork and palette exudes searing emotion, strength and fortitude
in this face ... a face that cannot be either ignored ... nor forgotten.
His very presence speaks a thousand words. Most excellent! :)

03-13-2011, 07:04 AM
Wow nice work! Gotta comment and get subscribed in the hopes new work is coming soon.

03-13-2011, 02:06 PM

06-24-2011, 01:02 AM
These are from a project that "died" officially just few months ago. Pictures are old, but still give me a smile every now and then :) Some are made with Artrage, others with Painter. Hope you enjoy them ;)
