OK I've been wanting to do a skull for a while so decided Art Rage 2.5 would be a good program to do it in. While trying to finish up I had an occurance that stopped me short a bit;

After about 15 layers the new transform layer tool no longer worked. All that would work was the menu options ( flip vertical, horizontal etc..). I was not able to use the move, rotate or zoom tool...nothing happened.

I decided to test it out again and created a new image with only a couple of layers and then the tool performed as expected without trouble.

I'm suspecting at this point that perhaps my machine just can't cope...not enough rescources perhaps ??

Win XP Home SP2
896 mb ram
1.5ghz

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone esle...

Not in this program because when I make images large -- like 16 x 20 inches at 300 dpi on one layer with a tracing image and some custom grain, it goes so slow that I gave up on trying to work that large.

That's the brick wall I encountered.

I know layered graphics files can get really really big. I'm no authority on ArtRage. Andy or Dave could probably answer it. But I don't think there's a pop-up 'low resources' warning, nor a way to assign hard drive space as virtual memory. Maybe it allocates it automatically.

Sure sounds like a memory issue to me though.

Hope it gets resolved.

As to your image, which is why you're in this section as opposed to Tech help,

I like it. Feels a bit Day of the Dead in a Mexican muralist sort of way. Or perhaps Gothic. Neat.

That's a stunning skull artwork. Aweseome shading.

Sounds like you're running out of memory. For a 15 layer document, 800MB is not very much. RAM is quite cheap now, so add more and your ArtRage performace will go up.

Thank you both. Ya I figured as much...my machine wont take more than 1 gb so that's that. Thanks again ! ps skull doesn't have much deeper meaning here...just wanted to do one.

Good advice on the technical side so I'll defer from further comment and just say ... wow! what an image!

Hi Jodi,

wow!!! Excellent Picture! I like the blending very much. Would you tell me which tools and technique you used to get such smooth blendings in the skull?

Thanks a lot for your answer in advance,
Marco

Hey Marco...it's oil paint but I used the new soft palette knife at a low pressure, smallish size to blend the paint to give it a smoother effect. I also had the paper roughness set to 0% for the entire painting.

gzairbone, thanks !
