View Full Version : Cracks In The Shell (slightly dark subject)

Hello there, my first post on this forum. I bought ArtRage 2 this weekend, and I got my first true taste of it today. Man, finally, after years of waiting there's a decent program out there that does paints. I've tried using Painter since the version 6, and every version update I tried it again and I couldn't make myself like the program...

Anyway, ArtRage is great, but it does lack one thing. I would dearly love to see a "normal" brush. You know, just normal round brush that you can resize from 1px to... say 300. Like in photoshop. I'm too used to using one by now, and I had to jump between ArtRage and Photoshop even now, because some fine details called for the normal brush.

Does anyone know if there is a such thing in Artrage? I didn't look too hard for one. If they would add such tool, Artrage would be my one stop tool for 2D work.

That is absolutely breathtaking and haunting all at the same time. Great job straechav! And Welcome.

For PS-like painting.You might try using the chalkset to [post-correction] 100% pressure and it goes down to one pixel for fine detail. Still not as fast as the PS brushes. But experimenting with all the tools you will find benefits to them all. I would agree that the brush tool works more like a "liner" brush than a PS brush.
At larger sizes you can load it up with paint for some neat effects. Enjoy!
I had it backwards... it should have read high pressure, not low.

For a more digital look to the tools (if you must! :) ) you can set the paper roughness to 0%, and use the crayons, pencils, and airbrush tools.

Yeah, thanks Andy & gzairborne, I did do some experimenting. I used what I learned to good effect in my new piece (aka "Struggle" which I'll post in a bit). It's not the digital look I want, it's the fine control and the hard edges. I love the oil paint brush, as you might have noticed, but it sure doesn't cut it when I want to do details. 8)

Thank you everyone for the kind comments. I haven't painted a thing for about a year, been too busy recording albums and such, so it's nice to know I haven't lost my touch.

Mayhap I should let ArtRage rest, and sleep a bit, since it's 4am here in Finland now... :twisted:

Wow!

I LOVE the way you have gotten this psychological action into your very transformational imagry. The figures are really well integrated with their techno-environment -- being done unto, with almost passive acceptance as they're eaten up by whatever larger force is at play.

Sort of a metaphor for modern life stretched out.

Neat.

I just realized it is the left side that is in annihilation... the more analytical side of the brain they say. The right side is intact... fortunately for us. :D

Heh, thanks for all the kinda comments, especially D Akey, it's nice to know that some people do notice some of the underlaying ideas and themes in my paintings. I do generally go primarily for "it has to look cool" but I do usually have a theme or story in them that you can dig up if you try to. Most don't really try. I don't blame them, but after the first five years I've stopped trying to preach through art. 8)

gzairborne, well I suppose that depends whom you ask, if it's good or bad. But thank you for the sentiment. :)

Along with AndyRage's suggestions, perhaps you might get the effects you want to achieve by using the palete knife - 10% pressure - edge off - when you have almost finished your painting.
