When somebody says sweet dreams, they are trying to wish you well as you go to sleep.

The idea is certain dreams are preferable.

These dreams are positive; you wake up energized, refreshed, and even happy after you've had these dreams.

The assumption is there is such a thing as a "sweet dream."

By implication, there has to be a bitter dream or not-so-positive dream for there to be a sweet dream.

The reality of sweet dreams can only occur if there's a distinction between what is preferred and what is not preferred, between things that people desire and things they'd rather avoid.

When somebody wishes you sweet dreams, it is personal.

In other words, they're not pointing your mind or bringing to your attention some sort of objective truth about what your dreams should be, as if people can agree that one specific dream or a set of dreams is universally positive.

At the end of the day, dream imagery like dragons or witches can be pleasant to you but disturbing to other people.

Because the imagery is a product of your experience and how you process it arises from what you've seen in the past and how your mind works.

So it would be safe to wish people a sweet dream and figure it out.

It is essentially just wishing somebody well as they go to sleep. :o
