I am doing a portrait in AR6 and need to get a tracing from the original photo to check contours and shading etc. I only have the actual painting on a layer and not a copy of the original photo in this painting. (lesson for next time learned). I have tried exporting it to photoshop and adding the photo and then a tracing, but when I transfer it back to AR it loses the canvas effect. the canvas is there in what i originally painted, but any additional painting has no canvas. I tried adding essential canvas under canvas settings, but it doesn't work, my new parts of the painting has lost the canvas and it looks awful. Is there a way to copy and paste a layer within AR?

I hope I understand correctly Kate but yes, you can Edit/Copy/Paste. It will be pasted on a layer above.

Just lately instead of loading a tracing image, I have added the reference as a new layer at the bottom of my layers stack and have used that to trace the outline on another layer above. It is much clearer than the tracing image. You can also select colours from that layer.

Great. I think I've managed to do what you say, and yes, original image on the bottom layer and then I can do some refining tracing in the same painting. I'm doing a human portrait just for fun, although its not that much fun! I never do people as a rule unless it heavily influenced by the original photo, but I thought I'd do a photo I took and love, but oh my goodness, its difficult. I gave up with actual paint and went with coloured pencils, which I do in real life, and use the small frost knife as a blender. Its much more like I want it but very airbrushed looking. I'd love to get this type of blending using paint, but the colours mix too much and make weird combinations. I need far more practice on that. I don't want to put the painting up on the critique forum as its at the ugly stage (for me at least!) and still fighting me. :-)

Have a look under Art Supplies. I have Skin Blenders and Pencil Pack and see if they are there - I forget where I got mine. Also Sumi Blenders are good.

I know the 'ugly' stage so well (me in the morning without makeup)

Hanzz is one of our returning members and has a very interesting thread on painting caricatures and also shares his skin sticker brush.

His thread showing his early works makes for interesting viewing - I'm sure he won't mind me mentioning him.
